The Oldham Psychological Medicine team consists of an MDT team of mental health practitioners, psychiatrists, physiotherapist, and psychological therapists. The team work alongside a range of acute, community and GP services, offering consultation with professionals as well as  assessment and intervention for patients. 

The patient group may have complex needs due to comorbidity of physical and mental health, and where physical health conditions may lack clarity around cause. Many of the patients may also have complex  interpersonal difficulties or heightened risk due to the distress caused by their symptoms. 

This role will provide management of the service and team, working alongside the Principal Psychologist and Medical Lead. Candidates for the post should have a background in forming good partnerships in care, managing staff, and building a safe environment for team working. They will have a solid background in mental health, with an understanding of  positive risk management, and able to hold this framework for the team in providing a high quality and safely led service.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day running of the service and operational leadership. Given the nature of the patient group, this will include building strong partnerships with local healthcare services, as well as making links into colleagues in neighbouring mental health teams. 

Working closely with clinical and medical leads, they will ensure governance of service delivery for this complex patient group. They will additionally link with the borough director, Strategic and Operational Lead for Psychological Medicine and senior colleagues to ensure that the team forms a part of the Oldham Living Well wider provision. 

As a representative of the service, the post holder will be a source of expertise and advocacy to enable other services to better understand the needs of people with long term health conditions or atypical healthcare utilisers. This will include linking with commissioners  and trust leads to report on the benefits to patient care, recognising where partnerships may help to improve the lives of patients and developing pathways to improve the patient journey.

Psychological Medicine supports patients with long term health conditions  and persistent symptoms and also supports people with atypical healthcare utilisation.  Patients  require interdisciplinary care and have complex mental health presentations as well as physical comorbidities. Psychological Medicine Services in Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust span the 5 boroughs. Teams work as an MDT and liaise with and work alongside  a range of physical healthcare services including GPs, community and acute care. Services come together as a Network to offer mutual support, and share expertise.

To take responsibility for the operational management and leadership of the Psychological Medicine Service (including both the Oldham Psychological Medicine Service and the integrated pain service)

To provide leadership that ensures local service development and service delivery in designated areas of responsibility reflects national policy, locally agreed ICB, GM and Trust priorities as well as accepted best practice

To act as a source of expertise in relation to the governance and care of adults with comorbid persistent physical symptoms and psychological distress as well as people who are atypical healthcare utilisers, working closely with the Psychology Clinical Lead and Medical Lead to maintain awareness of developing knowledge in this area.

Work with the Long Term Conditions Strategic and Operational Lead and where required, the Associate Director of the borough to deliver performance standards and report on monitoring process for operational services.

To lead and assist in the continuous improvement of services through development and change management

To develop, contribute to the planning, implementation and monitoring of local service plans, ICB plans and directorate level plans

Convey highly contentious information in atmosphere of dynamic change

Develop relationships with internal partners, external partners and GPs, using individual diplomacy as well as presenting to larger audiences.

Negotiate with ICB’s and third sector organisations on service level operational issues, change management, service mobilisation plans etc.

Contribute to borough plans appropriate to the development of improved pathways and service interface across mental health and learning disability services.

To be responsible for ensuring that the services within the designated areas of responsibility deliver evidence based, high quality, safe and supportive care to patients.

To be responsible for contributing to care pathways and protocols with referring agencies and commissioners to address policy guidance and standards

To be responsible for the management and control of designated budgets ensuring the effective use of finances and staffing resources

To be responsible for identifying financial pressures, cost improvements and effective use of resources within designated area of responsibility

To ensure that all staff area aware of policies, procedures and protocols and work within their framework at all times

Education/Qualifications

  • Specialist professional applied psychological qualification (to degree level) plus post graduate qualification (eg PWP) or Statutory Registered Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Social Worker qualification to degree level plus post graduate training.

Experience

  • A demonstrative experience working at a Team Management or Senior Practitioner level
  • Management & leadership within a mental health team or psychological therapy service at the level of team manager or senior practitioner

  • Track record of managing services performance
  • Research development and completion through to publication
