Band 5

Job overview

Permanent Band 5 Staff Nurse – TESH Pre-Assessment Unit.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with clinical experience to join an established dynamic nursing team within pre-operative assessment. The prospective post holder will be a registered nurse who after appropriate training can clinically assess, plan, deliver and evaluate care to a timescale for patients prior to elective surgery

The vacancy is a full time 37.5 hour position and precise working hours will be discussed at interview. The clinic is presently open from 8am to 6pm 5 days a week. The service is based within out-patients at Wythenshawe,  Withington & Trafford hospitals, cross site working will be required. The main post will be held at Trafford Hospital but cross site working will be required

Main duties of the job

The main objective of the unit is to assess and optimise patients for a wide range of elective surgical specialties therefore the prospective post holder will require a broad knowledge preferably within surgical nursing, although medical knowledge would be an advantage, with at least 18 months experience as a band 5 staff nurse. Previous Pre-operative Assessment experience would be desired but not essential. You will be reliable, innovative, and flexible with good interpersonal/communication skills.

You will be expected to undertake clinical observations such as blood pressure, pulse, oximetry and BMI  as well as clinical examinations such as MRSA screening, CPE screening, 12 lead ECG recording and venepuncture. The prospective post holder will be required to provide a comprehensive nursing and medical assessment, ensuring all necessary results and reviews are collated prior to admission.

You will assist in the development of an environment that supports the value of pre-operative assessment by working collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetist, and the MDT, therefore the candidate will need to have a high level of clinical judgement and decision making skills and be able to carry out clinical duties in accordance with national, Trust and local standards and maintain a patient focused approach.
