Job overview

Band 7- Maternity Site Coordinators

37.5 hours per week, working days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the maternity team at The Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as one of our Maternity Site Coordinators.

This is a new role and as part of our Maternity Site Coordinator team you will:

· On a shift-to-shift basis, lead coordination of the maternity operational activity to maintain patient safety and flow through the service, including acute and elective admissions.

· Ensure safe, efficient and effective service user flow, whilst ensuring optimal bed utilisation and staffing across the maternity service through co-ordination of admissions, transfers and discharges.

· Act as the senior midwifery lead during ‘out-of-hours’ periods and provide clinical operational support to all on-site maternity staff.

· Oversee out of hours management of the maternity site, including the response to security incidents, and to escalate any clinical and non-clinical issues to relevant on-call staff, other senior on site people as appropriate.

The post holder will ensure effective communication throughout the multidisciplinary team and support a positive safety culture. Excellent clinical skills, communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Main duties and Responsibilities: 

Clinical:  

  • To work collaboratively with the senior team to implement, deliver and evaluate effective capacity and flow through the maternity inpatient’s services. 

  • To collaborate with the Senior Midwifery and Operational Teams to ensure the delivery of high standards of clinical care.  

  • To provide professional advice and support regarding safeguarding issues to staff ensuring that the agreed procedures are followed, and that appropriate and timely referrals are made to an external agency if necessary.  

  • To provide senior midwifery support and advice to all clinical areas, including infection control and highly developed clinical skills such as commencing induction of labour. 

  • To attend to telephone calls pertaining to ‘In-utero transfer requests. The decision to accept or refuse will be based on the assessment of the unit staffing and workload as per the escalation policy in liaison with the obstetric and paediatric teams. The Maternity Site Manager will be notified of all ‘ex-utero transfers’ of babies or women and birthing people as well as all ‘transfers out’. 

  • To receive notification of positive Group B Streptococcus and MRSA results from the laboratory and actions the results and ensures that the woman/ birthing person is followed-up. 

  • To support service users in their patient journey through the service by ensuring clear lines of communication and advise is provided around any potential delays and act as a contact for women and birthing people to raise concerns.  

  • To attend any meetings appropriate to the post holder’s role, ensuring effective communication within the team and leading on actions to be undertaken and applications of recommendations. Meetings may include the multidisciplinary labour ward handovers, safety huddles and Trust bed meetings. 

  • Support, develop and deliver safe, effective and outstanding care for women and birthing people and their families. 

  • Provide clinical care in all clinical areas as required. 

 

Professional:  

  • Practice in line with the NMC Code of Practice.  

  • Provide guidance and advice for staff as required 

  • Develop a sense of social responsibility towards members of the working team.  

  • To ensure that all Trust standards are maintained and monitored to improve the quality of care to all whom come into contact with services.  

  • To participate in team, professional and personal development activities and promote commitment to continuous development and improvement.  

  • To maintain and develop own professional competence and remain responsible for meeting the requirements of Revalidation (NMC). 

  • To always act as a positive senior midwifery ‘leader-ambassador’ by providing helpful and professional clinical and non-clinical support to all on-site staff, families and visitors. 

  • To display a mature approach to challenging situations, including unexpected situations, including complex communication, such as delivering sensitive news.  

  • Be involved in continuous monitoring and maintaining quality standards of clinical practice and care through a variety of ways, for example, audit. 

  • Practice within the policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines agreed by the Trust.  

 

Management: 

  • To maintain up to date information on bed occupancy, activity, acuity, staffing levels and anticipated admissions within the clinical areas to drive patient safety and efficient use of staff and resources.  

  • To work closely with the Maternity Triage to ensure women and birthing people requiring admission are placed appropriately in a timely manner working with all teams within the organisation to find solutions when there is a risk this may not be achieved. 

  • To highlight any potential shortfalls in staffing due to sickness to relevant area manager/matron to update Healthroster. 

  • To liaise with Temporary Staffing during working hours and Clinical Site Practitioners (CSP) out off hours regarding staffing requirements. 

  • To coordinate the booking and allocation of all maternity inpatient beds. 

  • To inform the Manager/Matron of the day and Head of Midwifery when there is disparity between existing bed capacity and the placement of elective admissions with onward escalation to the Director of Midwifery as appropriate. 

  • Using escalation guidance, work in collaboration with the Manager/Matron of the day and Head of Midwifery when there are rising capacity pressures. 

  • To attend Northwest London Sector Surge calls as required. 

  • To ensure the completion of key performance indicators eg Birthrate Plus App data in all areas at the required times.  

  • To complete the staffing sheets daily and escalate any concerns to the matron/manager of the day. All weekend daily staffing sheets should be completed on a Friday. 

  • Complete a weekend plan and submit to the Clinical Site Team by 5pm on a Friday. 

  • To address any verbal complaints received from service users in real time and attempt to resolve these at a local level when a verbal complaint is being presented. 

  • To design and develop project plans for quality improvements and service developments both in the provider site and across the LMNS as required. 

  • To write and/or contribute to relevant reports as required 

  • Make sure recommendations from national guidelines, policies and strategies are consistently included in local practice. 

  • Ensure efficient and effective use of resources.

Criteria

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife
  • First level degree in related healthcare discipline or substantial experiential equivalence
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Mentorship or teaching accreditation: ENB 997 or equivalent, SSSA supervisor and assessor.
  • Substantial post registration experience in all areas of midwifery practice to include shift leading and managing staff
Desirable criteria
  • NLS Instructor
  • Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA)
  • Leadership qualification and or experience
