Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To ensure that the views of users and carers are sought and incorporated into all care delivered.

• To provide clinical cover for team members in their absence.

• To liaise as required with other disciplines and organisations to ensure that all issues affecting service user care are managed and communicated to a high standard.

• To provide written assessments reports/discharge letters for all allocated clients.

• To carry out Duty functions on a Rota basis

• To provide information and reports as required and accurately document all relevant information regarding clients and staff, in keeping with the Trust guidelines and the NMC standard for records and record keeping.

• To have an awareness of the need to manage resources effectively within determined budgets.
• To assist in the successful induction of new staff and regular supervision of students and junior staff.
• To have responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of self and others. To comply at all times with the requirements of the Health and Safety regulations.
• To participate in the development of junior staff, acting as a mentor for student nurses and a preceptor to newly qualified staff, ensuring appropriate teaching, support and supervision.

• To participate in clinical/team meetings.

• To enter information onto Rio in a timely manner in line with Trust guidelines and prepare reports as appropriate.

• To implement and contribute to policy and service development as appropriate.
• To carry out responsibilities to promote the smooth running of the clinical area.

• To actively promote and support the ongoing review of Mental Health Practice.

• To participate in the Trust's complaints procedure and critical incident reporting when required and work within the policies and procedures of the Trust.

Person specification

TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria

• RMN, social worker or occupational therapist with current relevant registration
• Practice Assessor qualification

Desirable criteria

• Diploma/BSC in Community Nursing
• Evidence of post registration training related to the provision of relevant psychosocial interventions

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria

• Demonstrable experience of working with people who experience serious ongoing mental health problems in a variety of settings
• Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
• Experience of assessing and managing crisis with those with a severe mental illness
• Experience of providing thorough baseline mental health assessments and case formulation based on these
• Experience of working in crisis teams/Recovery & Support Teams

Desirable criteria

• Experience of working in community nursing
• Experience of working in a CMHT or other community health setting
• Experience of contributing to policy and procedure development and implementation
• Experience of managing and supervising other staff
• Experience of recruitment and selection of staff
• Experience of managing and monitoring budgets

Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia: a progressive and complex condition that can be devastating for the whole family. One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime – either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family. Our specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, expert advice, support and understanding to help families care for their loved one. Every day, Admiral Nurses help families up and down the country to have the best life possible, for as long as possible.

Purpose of the job/about the role

Dementia UK has entered into an exciting three-year corporate partnership with a national partner. As a key component of this initiative, we will establish face-to-face Admiral Nurse clinics across the UK. This new team will bring Admiral Nursing to high street locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As part of the national Clinics Programme Team, you will provide in-person biopsychosocial support and advice, sharing your specialist dementia nursing expertise to help families manage the complexities of the condition. Your focus will be on supporting family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist dementia guidance in areas of the UK where Admiral Nurse services are currently unavailable, bringing a much-needed service directly to local communities. Throughout your work, you will consistently promote Admiral Nursing and a family-centred approach to dementia care.

You will receive full support with your continuous professional development from the Admiral Nurse Academy.

As this unique nursing role offers you the opportunity to travel across the country, and will include overnight stays, flexibility is essential. When not delivering face-to-face clinics, you will provide support on our Helpline, working from home.

Admiral Nurse – Delivered Services

Join our Delivered Services team as an Admiral Nurse and bring your specialist dementia nursing expertise to support family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist advice. You’ll be a key member of our team, providing biopsychosocial support through our National Dementia Helpline and Virtual Clinic appointments.

In addition to your core responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to lead and support other clinical projects across the charity, benefit from monthly clinical supervision, and participate in a range of learning opportunities to support your ongoing professional development.

As an Admiral Nurse, you’ll be responsible for providing nursing support and expertise, offering practical guidance to colleagues, the general public, those with dementia, and others in supporting family and relationship-centered approaches to dementia care. You’ll also lead and coordinate shifts as required, providing clinical supervision to others and assist with the development, evaluation, audit of the service, carer and supporters in different settings.

To be successful in this position, you’ll need to be an active Registered Nurse on the NMC register with a post-registration qualification or training in dementia care or a relevant subject. You will have significant experience of practicing as an Admiral Nurse or dementia specialist nurse and previously worked with people who have dementia and their family, carer and supporters in different settings.

Strong communication skills are essential, as is a proven track record of providing high standards of clinical leadership and specialist nursing support. You should be adept at providing clinical advice, clinical supervision, and advocating for family carers.
