Band 6 Sexual Health Nurse

Are you looking to enhance your clinical skills? Then come and join us in sexual health as we are currently recruiting a full-time band 6 nurse for our Stevenage clinic.

Sexual Health Hertfordshire is a multi-professional progressive team providing a comprehensive, evidence based and patient focused service in contraception, genitourinary medicine, and HIV. We run three level 3 clinics in Hatfield, Stevenage, Watford and two level 2 clinics in Cheshunt and Elstree.

The service is open Monday – Friday. 
We would like to recruit an enthusiastic nurse who is passionate on delivering high quality, evidence-based healthcare. Previous experience in sexual health and contraceptive care is desired but we will consider anyone who shows a keen interest in sexual health and developing their skills within this field of practice. Full training will be provided. This post is advertised as a Band 6 but equally can be offered as a band 6 training post.

Main duties of the job

•    To be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality clinical services within the context of a clinical governance framework

•    To establish good relationships with and work as part of the multi-disciplinary team, taking responsibility for the care of patients with Sexual Health and contraception needs, including assessment, investigation, diagnosis, and treatment for the individual patient group.

•    To ensure that all activities in the area are carried out within CLCH Directorate policy/National guidelines. 

•    To act as a professional role model, leading and developing clinical practice and to support and deputise for the Team Lead.

•    To supervise, teach & assess registered and unregistered staff including HCA’s.

•    To undertake health promotion activities in order to promote risk reduction in line with the objectives of The National Strategy for Sexual Health (2001). 

•    To ensure you work within the legal responsibilities as laid down in the Venereal Diseases Regulations 1974 

•    Ability to work within a variety of clinical settings including Dr Led hubs, Nurse Led spokes and outreach services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Sexual Health nurses are required to be competent in the following skills.  
•    Taking a full Contraception and sexual health history 

•    Undertake BBV risk assessments.

•    Recognising signs and symptoms of STI’s 

•    Asymptomatic and symptomatic screening of male and female patients. 

•    Taking of male and female genital swabs 

•    All current forms of HPV treatment 

•    Microscopy and making provisional STI diagnoses.

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Relevant contraceptive qualification
  • Evidence recent professional development
  • To work under Patient Group Directives (PGDs)
  • Recognised mentorship and preceptorship or willingness to undertake.
Desirable criteria
  • STIF Level 2 competence/GUM course
  • Trained in fitting and removal of Implants.
  • FSRH registered IUCD fitter or willingness to train.
  • Non-medical Prescriber qualification
