To provide Occupational Therapy four days a week with a maximum of one day duty cover in the team.
To manage an OT caseload of clients with complex needs, using evidence based /client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
To take responsibility for completing standardised assessments using The Model of Human Occupation and other frameworks as agreed by the Therapy Leads.
To offer manualised interventions, both group and individual for example, GLOW (Graduated Living Outside of the Ward) and IPEL (Increasing Participation in Everyday Life)
To offer Sensory Profiling to clients with sensory challenges
To participate in the planning, development and evaluation of OT services within the Community Team, holding responsibility for defined projects.
To engage with the OT referrals process, identifying and prioritising the need for OT specific interventions.
To provide leadership to junior staff through supervision and appraisal.
To regularly supervise OT students on practice placement (expected standard is two students per year).
To provide professional leadership to the Recovery Support Workers and engage in co-working pathways.
To promote recovery and social inclusion.
To work alongside the Involvement Team to actively promote service-user engagement and co-production.
To work collaboratively with the Employment Specialist in the team, to enhance a positive vocational outcome for clients.
To contribute to the maintenance and development of the Trust OT Service
To contribute to streamline working from admission to discharge in keeping with the principles in the Adult Services Recovery Care pathway.
To advocate for and promote the contribution of occupational therapy as a valuable resource with helping people to manage the impact of their symptoms on their ability to cope with daily occupations.
To act as the designated ‘Disability Champion’ leading the multi-disciplinary team in Disability Equality matters within the service and other areas as required.

Background

Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia: a progressive and complex condition that can be devastating for the whole family. One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime – either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family. Our specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, expert advice, support and understanding to help families care for their loved one. Every day, Admiral Nurses help families up and down the country to have the best life possible, for as long as possible.

Purpose of the job/about the role

Dementia UK has entered into an exciting three-year corporate partnership with a national partner. As a key component of this initiative, we will establish face-to-face Admiral Nurse clinics across the UK. This new team will bring Admiral Nursing to high street locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As part of the national Clinics Programme Team, you will provide in-person biopsychosocial support and advice, sharing your specialist dementia nursing expertise to help families manage the complexities of the condition. Your focus will be on supporting family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist dementia guidance in areas of the UK where Admiral Nurse services are currently unavailable, bringing a much-needed service directly to local communities. Throughout your work, you will consistently promote Admiral Nursing and a family-centred approach to dementia care.

You will receive full support with your continuous professional development from the Admiral Nurse Academy.

As this unique nursing role offers you the opportunity to travel across the country, and will include overnight stays, flexibility is essential. When not delivering face-to-face clinics, you will provide support on our Helpline, working from home.

Admiral Nurse – Delivered Services

Join our Delivered Services team as an Admiral Nurse and bring your specialist dementia nursing expertise to support family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist advice. You’ll be a key member of our team, providing biopsychosocial support through our National Dementia Helpline and Virtual Clinic appointments.

In addition to your core responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to lead and support other clinical projects across the charity, benefit from monthly clinical supervision, and participate in a range of learning opportunities to support your ongoing professional development.

As an Admiral Nurse, you’ll be responsible for providing nursing support and expertise, offering practical guidance to colleagues, the general public, those with dementia, and others in supporting family and relationship-centered approaches to dementia care. You’ll also lead and coordinate shifts as required, providing clinical supervision to others and assist with the development, evaluation, audit of the service, carer and supporters in different settings.

To be successful in this position, you’ll need to be an active Registered Nurse on the NMC register with a post-registration qualification or training in dementia care or a relevant subject. You will have significant experience of practicing as an Admiral Nurse or dementia specialist nurse and previously worked with people who have dementia and their family, carer and supporters in different settings.

Strong communication skills are essential, as is a proven track record of providing high standards of clinical leadership and specialist nursing support. You should be adept at providing clinical advice, clinical supervision, and advocating for family carers.
