Job overview

The post holder will work with the Day Surgery Matron and multi-disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining policies, standards of care and staff development, as part of the Day Surgery Team. In addition he/she will provide specialist care, support and deputise for the Team Leader/Clinical Coordinator in the management of the clinical area. This will involve dealing with complex situations and having to take appropriate action in emergency or unforeseen situations.

  • Following progression through the foundation gateway, the post holder will be supported to develop the skills and knowledge to progress through the second gateway when they will be expected to carry out all relevant duties without supervision, as delegated by line manager. 
  • Provide specialist advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers without supervision in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide high quality, effective, individualised pre and post-operative care to all patients.
  • To assess care needs and develop, implement and evaluate them without supervision
  • To assist in leading and monitoring the performance of the nursing team to deliver high quality patient care. 
  • To deputise for the Senior Sister or Charge nurse when required. 
  • To co-ordinate in the clinical area on rotation basis. 
  • To provide teaching and learning environment for the student nurses, trainee Operating Department Practitioners (ODP), Health Care Assistants (HCA) and junior staff to achieve their learning outcome. 
  • To ensure effective communication with the multidisciplinary team for the continuity and effective patient care.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years at pay band 5 within a relevant speciality
  • Experience of supervision of junior staff, teaching mentoring or equivalent course
  • Knowledge of research and audit
  • Ability to demonstrate application of the NHS Plan to own sphere of practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of continuing professional development, this will be a relevant post-registration qualification or equivalent experience
  • Experience of change management
