Job overview

Due to Maternity leave, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Matron for the Surgery and Urology department at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The department comprises of a 20 bedded elective ward with 4 POCU beds, a 30 and 22 bedded emergency wards, Urology Investigation Unit and an Admissions on the Day Unit.

It is a busy, friendly unit that provides high quality care for patients with a wide range of acute surgical illnesses or undergoing procedures.

You will be expected to take the professional nursing lead for the surgical inpatient and outpatient services within the department, working alongside a highly motivated nursing and medical team. You will part of the management team; working with the clinical lead and service manager in order to provide a quality and efficient service for all patients at Kingston Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is part of the Senior Management team in Cluster 6 and Surgery and Urology within the Division of Planned care. They will contribute to the strategic, clinical and operational management of the Division in collaboration with other members of the team to ensure that Trust and Divisional objectives are met. The post holder’s role is to be responsible and accountable for quality of care and effective delivery of services and clinical management of the designated clinical areas.

 

It is envisaged that the post holder’s time will mainly be spent in clinical and quality management capacity. It is expected that the post holder will work clinically on occasions to maintain clinical credibility and NMC registration.

 

The post holder will secure and assure the highest standards of clinical care by providing leadership to the professional and direct care staff within the group of wards for which they are accountable, ensure that administrative and support services are designed and delivered to achieve the highest standards of care within the group of wards for which they are accountable and provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in ward settings to whom patients and their families can turn for assistance, advice and support.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse - Adult .
  • Professional knowledge acquired through degree/diploma supplemented by specialist training or equivalent experience to master’s level equivalent
  • Evidence of ongoing personal development at senior management level ENB 998 or C&G 730 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Working toward masters.
  • Completion of an appropriate leadership management course
  • Specialist training in: Relevant speciality

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant years of recent experience relevant to the area of responsibility with 2 years at Band 7 level.
  • Able to demonstrate an in depth knowledge and experience in nursing quality and clinical audit/clinical governance
  • A proven record of success in managing significant operational/ strategic change whilst also developing and maintaining the provision of a high quality service, within a clinical setting, with multidisciplinary teamsement experience to include the management of a large multi-disciplinary group of staff – part of which to have been in the NHS
  • Experience of team working and building and maintaining effective working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Fully developing staff potential through facilitating training, development and education initiatives
  • Evidence of sound budgetary management experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in service redesign and project management
  • Experience of specialist surgical nursing.
