Job overview

The post holder will be clinically based and responsible for the delivery of high quality care at all times, providing clear professional clinical leadership primarily to the Paediatric Emergency Department but also working in close collaboration with the other ED Matrons and Lead practitioner to support the wider department.

The post holder will maintain effective communication channels throughout the trust in order to ensure that the needs of the patient and their family are placed at the centre of care delivery.

To work collaboratively with the Senior Sisters and Paediatric Nurses to ensure that the standards of patient care and cleanliness of the unit environments continue to improve.

Provide a visible and authoritative presence in the clinical areas for families & patients to access for advice and support.

The post holder will provide senior leadership in all paediatric clinical areas supporting the role of nurse in charge of paediatric ED providing specialist emergency nursing advice to co-workers and juniors working throughout the department.

The role will involve some clinical shop floor work to promote strong role modelling and clinical leadership. The service line is looking to expand its Matron cover within the department and the post holder will be expected to work closely alongside the other Matron(s) within the service line to ensure that roles, responsibilities and accountabilities are clear.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

·       Promote excellence in clinical practice.

·       To be a highly visible figure in the clinical areas of the Paediatric ED, to be an expert in Paediatric nursing, and demonstrate advanced clinical decision making skill.

·       Act as a positive clinical role model both within and external to the organisation.

·       Monitor practice within the units’ service to meet compliance with agreed standards, ensuring that performance targets and KPI’s are met.

·       To lead the development, implementation and evaluation of care initiatives to improve the quality of patient care, ensuring the patients and their families are at the centre, working the solutions around his/her needs.

·       Ensure continuity of care and a smooth and timely discharge of patients from the ED, through close liaison with the ED staff, multidisciplinary and primary care team.

·       To be proactive in providing health education to all patients and staff supporting the junior staff in this process.

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RN / RN Child RSCN
  • Emergency Medicine qualification / Paediatric A and E Course (formerly ENB A88) or equivalent
  • ENB 998 or equivalent  Relevant Degree or equivalent
  • APLS
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification.
  • PILS
  • Child Protection Level 3
  • Paediatric IV Drugs administration

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 2 years’ experience at band 7 with management responsibility within emergency medicine / Paediatrics
  • >5 years post-qualification experience in Emergency Medicine/ Paediatrics
  • Good Understanding and experience of budgetary management
  • Experienced in recruitment and retention
Desirable criteria
  • Research and Audit

Skills/ Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of implementation of Clinical Governance
  • Excellent management and organisational skills
  • Knowledge of safeguarding & child protection issues
