Job overview

The post holder will work in a nurse led catheter clinic where patients will attend for routine and non-routine catheter care. 

You will work alongside a senior nurse and manage the catheter clinic caseload and provide a high standard of care in line with IPC policy and guidelines. 

The post holder will be able to travel across boroughs. Clinics are held in B+D, Havering and Redbridge. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have or be prepared to undertake the following duties:

                • Venepuncture

                • Suprapubic/Male and Female urethral re-catheterisation

                • Bladder wash outs

                • Urine testing

                • Teaching students, patients, and carers

                • Involvement in auditing

                • Care plan writing and review.

                • Collection of specimens, i.e., CSU, MSU, Wound swab

                • Blood glucose monitoring – measure and interpret blood glucose levels.

                • Blood Pressure Monitoring, NEWS2, Vital signs, routine 12 lead ECG.

                • Assessment of nutritional intake, malnutrition, supplements. Use appropriate tools e.g., MUST/Waterlow.

                • Prevent and manage skin breakdown through appropriate use of products.   

• Pressure area management including ordering of appropriate equipment.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust.  All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment.  As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focussing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes.  The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High Cost Area Supplement - Outer London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,551 to a maximum of £5,735 p.a. pro rata for part time).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·       To be responsible for organising and prioritising own delegated workload.

· To have organisational knowledge relating to Trust protocols and procedures and adhere to them, particularly administration of medicine and moving and handling.

·    To be responsible for providing accurate records of information required by the Trust for audit purposes.

·   To ensure effective risk management at team level by accident/incident reporting, assessing and controlling risk and ensuring residual risks are added to the Trust register.

      To give holistic care to patients in the catheter clinics.

  To identify any changes in patient care needs or changes in physical or emotional and family / carer circumstances.

    To maintain accurate records electronically, record new problems as they are identified.

   To act as the patient’s advocate and, by providing information and support, facilitate the patients own choices with regard to personal care, promoting independence and self-care as appropriate.

   To be skilled in communication, establishing and maintaining good relationship with patients, carers, members of the Community Health and Social Care Team and other agencies involved.

  To maintain, update and develop personal, professional knowledge and skills achieving high standards of patient care at all times.

  To maintain confidentiality at all times with patients and their records.

   To offer support and to teach patients, relatives and other carer’s appropriate skills, imparting knowledge to promote positive health.

   To have knowledge of and be able to effectively use available resources.

   To participate in the teaching and support of student nurses, new staff and nursing assistants.

   To undertake training, which will lead to new skills being developed, in order to develop services.

  To maintain accurate records and statistical returns as required by the Organisation, including entering data onto the Rio system within the required time frame.

    To attend and contribute to team and other relevant meetings.

    To report and document any incident or accident occurring to a patient or a member of staff.

    To identify, report and take appropriate actions to mitigate any risks.

    To be responsible for the care and safe keeping and efficient use of stock and equipment issued and to report any defect or loss.

    Contribute to the effective and efficient use of resources by ensuring that supplies are available, alerting senior staff when supplies are short.  

   To participate in Clinical Supervision on a regular basis with a designated person.

     To participate in self-appraisal and performance review.

   To maintain appropriate and up-to-date knowledge and skills and to undertake continuing education in accordance with personal and service needs within the framework of a Personal Development Plan (PDP).
