Job overview
Although this position is a 12 months fixed-term contract, the actual contract duration will be adjusted to account for the time taken to advertise the post, complete the hiring process, and finalise pre-employment checks. This means the contract will begin when the candidate starts the role and may be slightly shorter than 12 months.
We currently have a Band 6 vacancy on our busy but friendly older people services unit at Newham Hospital and are looking to appoint a passionate, enthusiastic, and motivated Band 6 Nurse who is ready to take the next step and develop their leadership and management skills.
If you have been working as a senior band 5 in an acute medicine ward and have undertaken your ILS and Mentorship Course, or working towards mentorship and are ready to take the next step, this might be the perfect opportunity for you.
Main duties of the job
- The post holder will act as a role model for the junior team members in the delivery of high-quality patient centred care. They will deputise for the Ward Manager and will support with the leadership and management of the department particularly focusing on clinical care and standards

The post holder will work within the NMC Code, trust policies, guidance, and procedures to ensure safe working practice.
- We offer a structured orientation and on-going support and guidance. There are many opportunities to extend you knowledge and staff are supported and encouraged to attend both in house and external courses/training. We also have a dedicated PDN for the area

As well as supporting our staff’s professional development we offer a new Well-being space, outside areas including designated garden areas as well as fitness classes including a running group. Each of our departments also have wellbeing champions

Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with current NMC Pin
- Educated to degree level or working towards it.
- ENB 998 or equivalent mentorship course
- ILS
- Evidence of continued professional development

- ALS/EPLS
- Specialist course for area of practice
Experience

- Considerable acute ward experience at Band 5

- Taking charge on a shift to shift basis
