Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Professional 

1.1 Be involved in assessing planning, implementing and evaluating total care of the neonate.

1.2 Assist the senior nursing team (Education Lead and Matron) with the on-going setting, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of standards together with assessment of the quality of care including the views of the babies’ families.

1.3 Counsel and support families discerning when confidential information should be shared.

1.4 Complete all statutory documents, audits and data collection as required including Neonatal related outcome      measures.

2. Clinical

2.1 Attend high risk deliveries and initiate resuscitation of the newborn using specialist clinical judgement and highly specialist resuscitation skills, thereby undertaking the role usually undertaken by the Medical Staff.

2.2 Participate in the management and continuity of care for babies requiring intensive care, high dependency care, special care, transitional care and post natal care.

2.3 As an independent nurse/supplementary prescriber and working to set protocols, initiate drug therapy and intravenous fluids, including parenteral nutrition and blood or volume expanders.

2.4 Co-ordinate the care of the sick neonate by applying specialist clinical theoretical knowledge: This incorporates the following

•                     • Undertaking laboratory investigations and interpreting results

•                     • Independently initiating and managing all modes of ventilation under support from the Senior Registrar or Consultant Neonatologist

•                     • Requesting diagnostic investigations

•                     • Requesting and interpreting X-Rays

•                     • Undertaking invasive procedures as outlined in the ANNP competency document 2.5 Respond to neonatal emergencies and deliver advance neonatal resuscitation if required

•                     2.6 Provide clinical support for new junior doctors and senior nurses

•                     Maintain accurate clinical records

•                     Take the initiative in discharge planning; perform discharge examinations of infants and liaise with general practitioners and other members of the multidisciplinary team when appropriate.

•                     Maintain close liaison with senior medical staff and Sisters regarding the management of babies in all areas.

•                      Lead neonatal transfers and undertake referrals when required
