Job overview
- As a member of the preoperative assessment team the post holder will contribute to the delivery of patients’ individual care under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse
- The Senior Nursing Assistant demonstrates a level of skill and understanding which enables them to undertake specific tasks delegated by the nurse in charge and in accordance with relevant procedures, guidelines and policies. S/he will undertake both routine and specially identified tasks for which they have been trained and assessed as competent.
- The Senior Nursing Assistant within preoperative assessment plays a key role in the flow of the nurse clinics and the running of their own specific clinics. There is an opportunity for the Senior Nursing Assistant to run and manage their own clinics within the preoperative assessment department.
- Assist with the induction, supervision and training and development of Band 2 Nursing Assistants under the supervision of a registered nurse
- There is the real opportunity to develop within the role and undertake further training and development.
- To act as a role model for student nurses and colleagues.
Main duties of the job
The main duties include performing and documenting patients observation, phlebotomy and carrying out non-complex pre-assessments for adult patients undergoing minor operations under general anaesthesia.
This vacancy has been advertised in accordance with the new NHS pay rate which will take effect from autumn 2024. Please note if your employment starts before the 24/25 pay scales are implemented you will be paid under the 23/24 pay scales and any backpay will be adjusted accordingly. - NVQ Level 3 or Equivalent/New Diploma Level 3 or equivalent
- Evidence of literacy and numeracy skills to GCSE C or equivalent

- Completion of Assessor training
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience of working with patients in a hospital environment
- Previous experience of team work

- Previous experience of customer care
- Previous experience of working in an outpatient setting

- Competent in performing investigations & procedures e.g. ECGs etc.
- Ability to learn new skills quickly
- Ability to plan and prioritise workload
- Ability to communicate and present written information clearly
- Basic computer /key board skills
- Ability to understand and undertake monitoring of patients’ vital signs and escalate the outcome to a qualified nurse as necessary
Desirable criteria
- Competent in performing cannulation and phlebotomy
