Job overview
The post holder will be a Registered Nurse and CASE accredited sonographer who will take responsibility for the organisation and running of the Early pregnancy Services for the organisation.
The post holder will be responsible for co-ordinating the Early Pregnancy & Gynaecology Unit in the absence of the Unit lead with a focus on providing high quality clinical care to pregnant and non-pregnant women who experience complications in early pregnancy or with acute gynaecological presentations
This post includes ensuring patients’ with acute gynaecology and early pregnancy problems have timely access to investigations that they require to ensure that accurate and rapid diagnosis leads to an appropriate and timely treatment plan. The post holder will clinically assess and perform ultrasound for women with gynaecology or early pregnancy complications, plan and implement management or refer on to the on-call medical team where appropriate. The role will play a pivotal role in ensuring women and their partners are offered appropriate information, support and counselling and will work with the unit lead to ensure patients receive the most up to date information and guidance.
Main duties of the job
- To be an autonomous sonographer working as part of the Early Pregnancy, gynaecology and endometriosis teams providing specialist, skilled nursing care. Working in accordance with local and national guidelines and protocols.
- To formulate and carry out decisions and complex treatment plans for women attending Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy clinics independent of medical practitioners. The post holder will respond to actual and potential health problems and treatment complications appropriately.
- The post holder will be a certified sonographer with at least PG Cert in Ultrasound Scanning with a speciality in Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology
- The post holder will ensure they maintain their skill and take appropriate continual professional development.
- To coordinate supervise and develop the Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy service at the Trust with the lead consultant and Lead Nurse to ensure that the service is delivered to a high standard and within statutory requirements.
- To supervise doctors and nurses to become specialist sonographers.

Education
Essential criteria
- Registered with NMC
- CASE Registered Sonographer
- Mentorship qualification or recognised equivalent, i.e. ENB 998
- Gynaecology course/Women’s health related subject or willing to undertake.
- Counselling course or willingness to undertake
Desirable criteria
- Experience in facilitating reflection and clinical supervision
- Ability to adapt to change within working situation
- Advanced Practice/Physical Assessment qualification
- Masters in Women's Health or working towards
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience in Gynaecology at band 6
- Extensive experience in early pregnancy assessment including miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy care.
- Previous experience of managing an early pregnancy unit or equivalent service in women's health
- Evidence of adaptability to change
Desirable criteria
- Extended skills e.g. counselling
- Complaints Management
