Job overview

This unique post holder will be responsible to support the Practice Educators in local practice education activities in Anaesthetics 
The post holder will support band 6, band 5, band 4 Registered Practitioners and band 3 HCSW that require support and training for departmental clinical knowledge and skills in the perioperative environment, during their induction and need to complete clinical competencies and an active team member to the clinical services in theatre and outlying areas.
The CPF will work with practitioners in the clinical areas as role model in supporting good practice for individuals with up-to-date clinical practice to adapt their transferable skills into the current requirement of the speciality’s skill set. 
The foundation of this post is to work alongside with the Practice Educator and clinical leads to implement evidence-based practice while supporting daily clinical activities in the operating theatres.
The post holder will be responsible for promoting high standards of care through the demonstration of clinical expertise and promotion of a clinical environment with supervision from Practice Educators to encourage learning, professional and practice development working within the theatres.

The foundation of this post will be enabling anaesthetic practitioner to implement evidence-based practice and demonstrate technical ability in the care of patients in each clinical specialist area.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.    Assessing the development needs of the clinical staff (band 6, band 5, band 4 and band 3) and documenting, learning objectives and promoting the individual to maintain a professional development plan. 
2.    Provides daily clinical support to the practitioners in the theatres and outlying areas with the following:
a.    Clinical teaching to perform all the tasks of a specialist registered nurse/ODP with assisting and supporting the anaesthetist to deliver general anaesthetic, sedation and local anaesthetics/regional blocks to in line with national/local policy and SOP’s.
b.    Clinical teaching in the safe use of medical equipment and always monitor the safety practice.
c.    Medicines Management including IV practice.  
d.    Technical skills in care of the patient undergoing complex major surgery (including equipment-based competency).
4    Recognises issues related to poor performance, capability and escalates performance/capabilities issues to the individual line manager in an appropriate and timely manner and supports individuals with any proposed PDP. 
5    Promote a safe learning environment for all staff to maximise their potential and explore creative approaches to the professional development to ensure that individual professional learning requirements are met.
6    Demonstrate and work in accordance with the trust values. 

Person specification

Attainment

Essential criteria
  • BSc level healthcare qualification (Nursing/ODP)
  • Post registration.
  • Recognised post registration Anaesthetic course if NMC registered.
  • Mentorship / SSSA (Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment) Competencies

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience post qualification
  • Significant experience working at band 6 level in Anaesthetics.
  • Significant experience in clinical supervising role, facilitating/assessing student/learners in practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of public speaking or delivering classroom lectures.
  • Recovery PACU experience
