Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse with considerable advanced nursing skills in Gynae-oncology to join our Gynaecological team. The post holder has a distinct level of responsibility to patients with Gynaecological tumours in providing a comprehensive advanced nursing service to the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, working within a team of advanced practice nurses. 

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic and experienced, who enjoys patient contact and working in a multi-disciplinary environment to support the delivery of a quality service. You must be able to demonstrate good communication skills, flexibility, and reliability and have an organised approach to work.

Due to the nature of the role, we are looking for a dependable and highly adaptable individual who works independently and has the ability to fit in quickly as part of a team.

Main duties of the job

The Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Gynae-oncology will integrate into the gynaecology surgical team ensuring the following tasks and responsibilities are consistently met to a high standard: 

  • Routine management of gynaecology surgical patients in in-patient and out-patient areas, in collaboration with the surgical team.
  • Follow-up care post completion of primary treatment.
  • Advanced clinical assessment, initiation of care and treatment, and monitoring of disease progression and efficacy of treatment.
  • Act as a highly specialised role model and leader for all members of staff.
  • Play a major role in the continuous development of the services within the Trust and as a potential member of a range of trust patient experience/ quality/process improvement project groups.

  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all work undertaken and to practice at an advanced level of professional autonomy and accountability that is within national gynaecological cancer guidelines, Royal Marsden Trust policies and NMC Codes of Conduct.
  • To support the patients’ key worker ensuring continuity through the patient journey including transition between the surgical gynaecology and oncology departments, both within the Royal Marsden and the wider referral network.
  • To perform health assessments including obtaining a clinical history, conducting the physical examination and assessment of psychological wellbeing.
  • To order diagnostic tests (e.g. blood tests, CXR, echocardiography, MRI, CT, bone scan, DEXA scan) as appropriate and in keeping with National and Local guidelines.
  • Liaise with the Radiology department to organise urgent investigations /procedures.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First level registration
  • First level degree in a relevant specialty
  • MSc or working towards in relevant subject
  • Relevant formal teaching / mentoring experience
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Post Registration qualification in cancer nursing
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Advanced physical assessment qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post-registration experience in surgery, e.g experience as an ANP or CNS preferably with gynaecology/oncology experience
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrable experience in a range of cancer care settings
  • Pelvic examination

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Clinical Skills e.g. Venepuncture and Cannulation
  • Experience in a specialist gynaecology or oncology nursing role.
  • Evidence of good leadership qualities, including delegation and co-ordination of teams
  • The ability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English to a wide range of people both internally and externally, often involving highly complex or sensitive information.
  • Presentation skills
  • Ability to innovate and respond to change
  • Ability to interpret and implement new policies into workplace procedures
  • Evidence of commitment to patient & carer involvement in care
  • Knowledge of clinical governance issues and risk management strategies
  • Ability to make decisions, organise & prioritise
