Job overview

We are looking for exceptional, committed, caring and compassionate Staff Nurses to join our Ophthalmic Oculoplastic team.

We will provide the successful candidate with a comprehensive induction programme, Full Ophthalmic training will be provided.

The successful candidate will demonstrate comprehensive holistic assessment of patients, utilising a variety of advanced clinical skills; whilst acting as a role model in line with the Oculoplastic specialist Nurse role for the service.

You will assess and diagnose specific symptoms within your scope of practice. Advise medical and nursing staff and/or prescribe medications according to patients’ requirements, writing a record in the medical notes, reassessing according to the individual patient needs, Scrub in the clean room and admit and discharge patients with service information to support the patient once they leave the department.

This role is to primarily support delivery of Oculoplastic, Oculoplastic specialist Nurses and Consultants, allowing them to support the service delivery in a clinical capacity.

Main duties of the job

Our Oculoplastic service treats over 20k patients a year alone as a sub specialty in Ophthalmology of the 180k a year that pass through the service.

We provide Minor Operations (outpatient procedures),  face to face clinics, and training. The team is led by 4 consultants and a full comprehensive stand alone Specialist Nursing team team.

You will provide support in the clean room, clinic and with other nursing related duties, working across the Hospital and community to deliver Oculoplastic services.

The busy Ophthalmology department consists of an ambulatory Day Case Unit providing pre and post- operative care to in excess of 60 patients per day, two large outpatient clinics, Orthoptics, Optometry and an Emergency Eye department, providing Ophthalmology care and treatments for patients with a wide variety of Ophthalmic conditions.

The Ophthalmology team offers a full range of specialist services in order to facilitate a timely, safe and effective patient journey.

  • Work within the financial budget allocated to your speciality, in collaboration with the line manager, General Manager and Head of Nursing.

  •  Promote improvements of quality and clinical effectiveness within resource constraints.

  • Deliver any relevant clinics for your service, to meet performance targets within speciality.

  •  Act as a positive role model through the provision of effective professional leadership for relevant clinical areas and demonstration of competent and accountable clinical practice.

  • Act as an adviser/educator and role model to less experienced doctors, nurses and therapists (MDT) to ensure appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated.

  •  Be accountable for one’s own professional practice and professional development and ensure registration and compliance with the NMC and the Code of professional Conduct or other relevant regulatory body for the discipline.

  • Support junior members of staff to do the same.

  • Facilitate supervision of post-registration health professionals, students and all learners wishing to extend their knowledge of your speciality.

  • To participate in cross-site working to deliver equitable care, regardless of hospital site, for all patients within the scope of specialism
  • To scrub in the clean room supporting Minor Ops lists within Ophthalmology
  • Support outpatients clinics being involved in face to face consultations.
