We are seeking an exceptional individual who is both enthusiastic and passionate to apply for this exciting opportunity.

The  East Midlands Planned Care Centre (EMPCC)  is a new and exciting development opening on the Leicester General site of University Hospitals Leicester providing Day case and Out patient  treatment and care for patients throughout the East Midlands.  

We are looking for passionate, motivated Deputy Ward Leader to support and care for  patients who are to receive treatment  on the Medical Day case ward which will be a Nurse Led facility 

You will be an an experienced nurse with proven evidence of leadership , good communication skills and a willingness to support the Ward Leader to provide exceptional standards of patient care.  You will have experience of looking after a range of patients providing therapeutic treatments or procedures such as Blood transfusions Ascitic drains & Intravenous Infusions. You will have extended skills such as venapuncture & cannulation  however full training will be given.   Experience in Gastroenterology, Oncology or Haematology is essential for this role.

Main duties of the job

  • You will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of our patients care.

  • Participate in the effective clinical leadership and management of the ward team, which will include leadership and supervision of other healthcare professionals, carrying out all aspects of the caring process.

  • You will have and develop leadership skills ensuring you are able to deputise and take charge of the ward in the absence of the Ward Manager.

  • Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care, to contribute to the improvement of services and the quality of care provision to meet the needs of patients, service users and their families. 

  • Act as a role model, mentoring, teaching, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement and participate in the education, development and mentorship of other staff.

  • In addition, you will play a key role in ensuring effective communication between patients, carers, clinical staff and the wider multidisciplinary team.

  • As an effective role model, you will be involved in using your own knowledge to develop and enhance the development, skills and competence of others.

  • You will have the opportunity to use specialist knowledge, skills and innovative practice to provide a high standard of care and maintain patient safety.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assist with and deputise for the Sister / Charge Nurse in the management and organisation of the ward/Clinic. 

  • Maximise use of clinical and staff resources, implementing best practice in patient flow, admission and discharge arrangements. 

  • Promote the development of new services within the ward area and assist the Sister / Charge Nurse to implement change. 

  • Maintain efficient and effective communication with the Sister / Charge Nurse, the multidisciplinary team and the Matron on issues related to patient care, ward management and organisation. 

  •  Participate in staff recruitment and selection processes and wider recruitment and retention strategies. 

  • Act in a Professional manner and ensure self and ward staff adhere to the UHL Uniform policy

  • Act as a clinical expert and use own knowledge to develop and enhance the development, skills and competence of others. 

  • Work collaboratively with the Education and Practice Development team, Clinical Support Nurses and Multi Professional Teams to ensure that education and development opportunities are provided for the ward team to enable staff to be both confident and competent to perform their roles safely. 

  • Act as a clinical resource, mentor / assessor / supervisor / preceptor of learners and staff as required. 

  •  Actively promote and participate in clinical supervision / mentorship or equivalent support mechanisms.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RN with current NMC PIN
  • Recognised teaching& assessing qualification or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Involvement in Audit or research

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experienced nurse with knowledge of Gastroenterology, Oncology or Haematology patients treatment and procedures. IV infusions, Ascitic Drains, blood transfusions
  • Has Nurse in Charge experience & demonstrates good leadership qualities
Desirable criteria
  • Attended professional development Leadership course ie LEO
  • Venepuncture & cannulation

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Excellent written & verbal skills
  • Act as a role model and as a mentor, assessor and support for learners in the ward
  • Effective communicator and negotiator
