An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for an Adult Safeguarding Practitioner, to join the Safeguarding Team. 

Do you have a professional qualification in health or social care and knowledge of both safeguarding adults and the mental capacity act? The role is suitable for nurses, therapists or social care professionals .  

Safeguarding is everyone’s business so in this role you will be working across the whole Trust with all professional disciplines and all grades of staff. The LTHTR Adult Safeguarding Team works to support clinicians to deliver safe, holistic practice, upholding the human rights of vulnerable adults in accordance with the law. The successful candidate will be key in ensuring that the Trust upholds its statutory obligations in line with the Care Act 2014. The team also has a responsibility for reviewing adult safeguarding alerts and identifying key themes and trends in support of the divisional governance processes and ensuring there are sufficient systems in place to ensure we meet operational standards. The post holder will contribute to and co-ordinate the investigations of Section 42 enquiries as instructed by the Local Authority. The team also provides training, support and guidance in relation to the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and ensures that the Trust are compliant with this legislation through having oversight of  Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards applications made by the Trust.

  • Act as a resource and provide support to clinical areas on Safeguarding patients.
  • Provide training to all colleagues for safeguarding adults and MCA/ DoLS
  • Provide quality assurance of Trust DoLS application by ensuring compliance with the Mental Capacity Act (2005)
  • Work with Trust staff to promote Safeguarding and to identify relevant cases.
  • Undertake regular audits of practice
  • Document and communicate clear safeguarding management plans
  • Maintain a high profile within the clinical environment
  • Liaise with service managers on safeguarding issues to ensure consistency across the organisation
  • Ensure all relevant staff are aware of the differentiation between appropriate and inappropriate disclosure of confidential information
  • Ensure a culture of acceptance and understanding by all health professionals of their responsibilities for safeguarding  vulnerable adults.
  • Advise their line manager of safeguarding matters within the Trust as they arise
  • Support the Specialist Safeguarding Practitioner, the Lead Professional for MCA/ DoLS and the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Adults in the delivery of the safeguarding agenda throughout the Trust.
  • To take on the role of duty practitioner as per rota
  • Use developed professional skills and knowledge to challenge practice Challenge professional misconceptions and poor practice, highlighting implications to staff for their own practice and therefore influencing change

  •  Act as a resource and provide support to clinical areas on Safeguarding patients by:
  •  Ensuring adherence to Trust policies, procedures and guidelines 
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records
  •  Offer expertise and advice to multidisciplinary team members
  • Work with Trust staff to promote Safeguarding and to identify relevant cases.
  • Work closely with Safeguarding colleagues to ensure timely review and response to safeguarding referrals
  •  Under the direction of the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Adults, the Lead Professional for MCA/ DoLS and the band 7 Specialist Safeguarding Practitioner the post holder will undertake:
  • Regular audits of practice
  •  The development of action plans to address any issues identified
  •  The promotion of education programmes to address issues
  • The evaluation of the effectiveness of action plans and education delivered
  • The post holder will document and communicate clear safeguarding management plans to  the clinical teams concerned with individual patient care
  •  Maintain a high profile within the clinical environments to enhance clinical relationships and maintain personal practice knowledge and skills where appropriate by providing safeguarding support and advice
  •  Promote good communication links at all levels in respect of adults  about whom there are concerns, in line with local information sharing protocols to achieve better outcomes for vulnerable adults
  •  To liaise with service managers on safeguarding adult  issues to ensure consistency across the organisation
  • Ensure a culture of acceptance and understanding by all health professionals of their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with Ward managers, Nurse Consultants, Clinical Nurse Specialists and other interested ward staff and members of the multi-disciplinary team within divisions to plan and facilitate changes and innovations in clinical 
    practice
  • Use developed professional skills and knowledge to challenge practice and facilitate Emergency Department and Ward staff to find solutions to identified problems; using diplomacy, tact and negotiation to influence change in practice by accurately identifying, 
    assessing, implementing and evaluating different strategies to achieve identified goals
  • Challenge professional misconceptions and poor practice, highlighting implications to staff for their own practice and therefore influencing change.

  • Operate as duty practitioner receiving internal and external enquiries and providing expert advice on matters relating to safeguarding.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Up to date expertise in and specialist knowledge of the Safeguarding Agenda
  • Comprehensive knowledge of legislation relating to Safeguarding and the implications for practice including the Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, PREVENT and Domestic Abuse.
  • In depth knowledge of National and Local Safeguarding policy and Strategic safeguarding priorities
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
  • Extensive knowledge of local health care provision and the ability to signpost
  • Experience of working with a range of professionals across differing organisations
