Job overview

Are you experienced Theatre Scrub Practitioner? Are you ready to take on the responsibility of Team Leader in our plastics theatre at Preston Hospital for a 12 month secondment?

You will be acting as an expert clinical resource within theatres and take direct managerial responsibility for the clinical area in the absence of the Theatre Manager as well as assisting in the leadership and development of all theatre staff.

You must be either a registered General Nurse or an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with extensive scrub experience in Plastics in order to lead our enthusiastic team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assist and support the Clinical Manager in the 
    safe and effective management of the service 
    including management of staff, facilities and 
    associated systems and processes. 
  • Communicate all relevant information to the 
    multidisciplinary team internally and with external 
    organisations as required, to ensure seamless 
    care 
  •  Acts as a role model presenting a positive image 
    of self, the team and the organisation. 
  •  Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination 
    of care, making optimal use of operating 
    sessions. Identify potential bottlenecks and 
    facilitate smooth patient flow through the 
    department. 
  • Ensure a high standard of service delivery is 
    delivered by self and others based on assessment, 
    planning, implementation and evaluation of care to 
    meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence based 
    guidelines. 
  • Set, monitor and maintain standards of care to 
    improve the patient experience and outcome of care. 
  • Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, 
    conforming to health, safety and security legislation, 
    policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Communicate all relevant information to the 
    multidisciplinary team internally and with external 
    organisations as required, to ensure seamless care
  • Promote provision of patient education and health 
    promotion 
  • Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, 
    respecting and meeting the needs and choices of 
    individuals
  • Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped 
    and compliant with standards for hygiene and 
    cleanliness. 
  • Participate in education and training of junior staff 
    encouraging professional growth and development.
  • Maintain and develop own professional competence 
    and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge 
    and skills within scope of role and professional 
    practice 
  • Demonstrates and maintains competence in 
    anaesthetic practice (ODP’s)

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Registered nurse / ODP with current NMC/ HCPC registration
  • Evidence of current and continuing professional development
  • Extensive experience in Plastic surgery Scrub
  • Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 12 months commencement in post.
Desirable criteria
  • Degree in related health care area
  • Level 3 ILM (Institute of leadership and Management) or equivalent.
  • Core people management skill

  • Awareness of changes in practice and the ability to implement change.
  • Knowledge of escalation and cancellation processes
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
Desirable criteria
