Our speciality makes us exciting, ambitious and forward-thinking and we are looking for a committed, enthusiastic, motivated and resilient individual to join our nursing team.
This exciting opportunity will allow you to work as part of our dedicated, hardworking and friendly team in one of our two JAG accredited Endoscopy units within the Trust. Although you will initially be based at the Royal Preston Hospital, you will be expected to provide cross site cover at Chorley District Hospital Endoscopy unit when needed.
Previous Endoscopy experience would be desirable; however, this is not essential as support and extensive training will be given to an excellent standard, including an 8 week supernumerary period with a dedicated mentor and our Clinical Educator.
Main duties of the job
You will have excellent communication skills, be forward thinking and well organised, with a positive attitude towards flexibility and change. Your role will be to work as part of a team providing patient centred, clinically effective and compassionate care, which will ensure the patients have a positive Endoscopy experience.
Across both units, we carry out a wide range of both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures to both outpatients and inpatients, these include:
Procedures at Royal Preston Hospital include:
- GI procedures including; OGD/Colonoscopy/Flexible sigmoidoscopy/Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)/Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)/Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) .
- We work with the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) as part of the team in the north-west.
- Diagnostic bronchoscopies.
- GI Emergency Bleed rota.
- Diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy including: Endobronchial Ultrasound/Trans Bronchial Needle Aspiration (EBUS/TBNA)/Endobronchial Valves and coils and stents/Thoracoscopy/Indwelling Pleural catheter (IPC) placement/Nasal-endoscopy for Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties to include but not be limited to:
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and national standards and evidence-based guidelines.
- Support and provide patient education and health promotion.
- Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff.
- Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Assist in setting, monitoring and maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care
- Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all care activities, in a timely manner, adhering to local and professional standards for documentation.
- Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation.
- Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.
- Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.
- To participate in education and training of junior staff.
- Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice
- Proactively engage with Trust wide or local changes and developments in nursing practice e.g. alcohol screening.
- Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level and then report the outcome to line manager.
Person specification
Qualifications and Education
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse with appropriate NMC Registration
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing
- Student nurse working towards a degree
- NMC recognised mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months of commencement in post
Desirable criteria
- Student nurse who has undertaken a placement on an Endoscopy unit
- Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses.
- NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months of commencement in post.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of the area of speciality-Endoscopy; with evidence of and an understanding/knowledge of JAG
- Awareness of changes within Nursing practice including research & development
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice e.g. Risk Management, Clinical Audit & Quality and Ethical issues.
- Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures and current nursing issues.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of Leadership and Management
- Awareness of JAG.
- Evidence of clinical competences in area of speciality e.g. Endoscopy
