We are looking for experienced Emergency Department children’s nurses to join our dedicated team

The paediatric area is a new development within the department and we are looking for people dedicated to improving the care of children in our area working together to achieve our goals.

Main duties of the job

To ensure the day to day efficient running of the paediatric area in ED, providing strong leadership and direction to the team, monitoring and maintaining standards of care and professional practice.

Be responsible for ensuring the planning, delivery and evaluation of care to meet the personalised health and wellbeing care needs of patients, in line with the Trust’s values and Nursing and Midwifery Professional Framework.

Act as a strong role model and provide development, clinical supervision and advice for other staff and students to support them in reaching their full potential.

To ensure the productive operation of the ward environment through the maintenance of a safe, clean and organised environment.

Working for our organisation

We are a busy directorate seeing approximately 121,309 patients per year across the two sites, 27,360 of who were children. Last year over 700 major trauma patients were cared for at the Royal Preston site.
Our team consists of 19 consultants, 3 advanced nurse clinicians, a team of emergency nurse practitioners, experienced emergency nurses both adult and child, trauma technicians and health care assistants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure effective management of the area including management of personnel, facilities and associated systems and processes
  • Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation
  • Be responsible for the delivery and coordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff
  • Ensure a high standard of nursing is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patient’s needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence based guideline
  • Set, monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of car
  • Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guideline
  • Communicate all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless car
  • Promote provision of patient education and health promotion
  • Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs of choices of individual
  • Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standard for hygiene and cleanliness
  • To participate in education and training of junior staff
  • Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice

 

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate NMC Registration
  • RN8 or RNC Children’s Nursing Posts
  • Diploma in Nursing
  • NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
  • Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses
Desirable criteria
  • BSc
  • APLS/EPALS
  • Safeguarding level 3

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Competent in ED skills such as taking bloods, ecgs, triage and manage minor injuries and willingness to develop further skills
  • Experience of working in an ED setting
  • Competent to work in resus and to support junior staff in this area
  • Awareness of changes within Nursing Practice
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of ethical issues
  • Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality
  • Knowledge of Leadership and Management
  • Understanding of CQC standards and Processes
  • Experience of recruitment process
  • Experience of managing capability and performance
