Main duties of the job
You will be responsible for providing a range of personalised care for patients and a range of clinical duties under the guidance and supervision of the team leader/nurse in charge including: assisting patients with personal hygiene, toileting, use of continence aids, catheter care, stoma care, measuring & monitoring patient output, removal of catheters, moving and handling, use of mobility appliances, correct patient positioning, assess pressure areas and skin integrity, ensuring patient safety, taking specimens including blood sugars, taking and recording physical measurements observing patients for changes in condition, carrying out simple dressings, removal of venflons.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
GCSE's in Maths and English Grade C or above (or Functional Skills / Key Skills Level 2) and an NVQ in Health level 2 or have completed the internal Level 2 HCA Programme is essential in order to apply for this position.
Our Senior healthcare Assistants are required to:
-Provide good quality personalised care in accordance with agreed local and national standards.
-Present a positive image of self, team and the organisation.
-Take samples from patients for testing or dispatching eg: Urine, sputum, faeces, MRSA swabs
-Assist patients to meet nutritional needs in line with their individual care plan.
-Undertake clinical duties relevant to clinical area following achievement of competencies.
-Assist to maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.
-Assist in maintaining standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.
-Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.
-Contribute to maintaining safe, clean, and productive care environment, compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.
-Maintain and develop own competence.
-Actively try to resolve issues and complaints at local level and then report the outcome to line manager.
Person specification
Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- GCSE Maths & English grade C or above OR level 2 numeracy skills and level 2 literacy skills
- NVQ in Health Level 2 or completed internal Level 2 HCA course
- Must be willing to undertake Trust internal HCA course
Desirable criteria
- Level 3 QCF diploma (Qualification Credit Framework) in healthcare / NVQ level 3
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience of working in an acute health care or related setting
- Understanding of health and safety issues within healthcare
- Understanding of concept and application of confidentiality
- Understanding of the role of a band 3 senior HCA
Desirable criteria
- Previous hospital experience
