Maternity Tobacco Dependency Advisor

Job overview

We have a rare and exciting opportunity to join our Tobacco Dependency in Pregnancy team. We are seeking an enthusiastic and confident advisor to support pregnant people and their families to stop smoking; contributing to important work to reduce smoking and tackle health inequalities for the population of Tameside and Glossop.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Lead Midwife for Tobacco Dependence and other team members to promote and support Smoke Free Pregnancy in line with regional and national best practice. 

Using a flexible and innovative approach you will provide smoking cessation advice and support to service users in both hospital and community settings via face to face and telephone contacts, and should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to fulfil this role. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to engage with people and communities to motivate and support change in behaviour.

In this role you will be expected to work well within a team but also independently and without direct supervision. You should be well-organised and able to manage and prioritise your work to meet the needs of the service and the people you support.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with the Lead Midwife for Tobacco Dependence and other team members to provide individualised stop smoking support to women and families in a flexible and innovative way. This post will contribute to tackling inequalities in health through promoting and supporting people to stop smoking. It focuses on engaging with people in communities and offering them practical support to change their behaviour to achieve their own choices and goals. 

The post holder will play a key role in the collecting, collating and reporting of Smokefree Pregnancy data. The post holder will be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as directed.

Essential criteria
  • GCSE A-C/4-9 English and Maths
  • NVQ level 3/4 or equivalent health related studies OR substantial experience delivering stop smoking interventions/support
Desirable criteria
  • Smoking Cessation Advisor intermediate level qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience providing healthcare advice or promoting healthy lifestyle advice
  • Experience providing help, support and/or counselling
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of providing smoking cessation support
  • Experience of working with pregnant women

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • A good understanding of evidence-based practice in relation to smoking cessation, the consequences of smoking and the benefits of quitting
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with professionals/individuals from a variety of different backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and listening skills
  • IT literate
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and co-ordinate own schedule
Desirable criteria
  • Smoking cessation NCSCT trained
  • Experience of using Quit Manager or another database/electronic clinical record system
