Theatre Practitioner

Band 5

Job overview

Are you a theatre practitioner looking for a new role? Will only the best do for you and your patients? Do you want to be part of a dynamic team?

We are currently looking for driven, methodical and highly motivated registered practitioners to join our operating theatre departments.

Whether you are a registered nurse, Operating Department practitioner or paediatric nurse looking for a change or to gain experience with more complex and specialist surgery and anaesthetic, we want to hear from you.

This role will be a great opportunity for you to progress in your career.

Main duties of the job

We are a mainly elective site at Maidstone Hospital and cover a wide range of specialities with a focus on elective surgery – including Urology, Oncology and non Oncology Gynaecology, Upper GI, Breast and Orthopaedics. We do perform emergency Urology and Ophthalmology surgery, and remain on standby for any complications.

We have four theatres in our Main Theatre department, two theatres in our Day Case theatres, two Ophthalmology theatres, and one Oncology theatre. We also visit outside areas like Cardiac Cath Lab and the CT scanner to assist our colleagues in other departments. We also opened our Elective Joint Surgery theatre (Maidstone Orthopaedic Unit) in December 2016. Soon will be opening our new Elective Orthopaedic Complex (KMOC).

These posts are full time (37.5 hour four day week with varied shifts). This post will also require you to work the occasional late shifts (until 20:00), and perform weekday/weekend on calls from home currently standing at 1/12 weekends.

Working for our organisation

MTW is a large acute hospital trust in the south-east of England.

We provide a full range of general hospital services and some aspects of specialist and complex care to around 600,000 people living in west Kent and East Sussex. We have a team of over 8,000 full and part-time staff. We also provide specialist cancer services to around 2 million people across Kent and East Sussex via the Kent Oncology Centre.

In the 2024 NHS staff survey, our employees ranked MTW among the top 10 NHS Trusts nationwide and the second-best Trust to work for in the South East.

Would you like to work flexibly?  In the NHS, we are reminded every day of how important life is. As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us, for our patients and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
