To join a team of nurses in the field of osteoporosis. As a nurse led unit you will undertake Bone mineral density scanning, run parenteral clinics for patients with osteoporosis and be responsible for providing advice, explanation to patients and participate in national audits.
Main duties of the job
To undertake BMD measurements using Hologic Dexa machine and in accordance with National Guidelines.
To give advice and explanations regarding tests and procedures relating to osteoporosis.
To identify the patient risk factors for osteoporosis and provide appropriate verbal and written advice/education.
Participate in national audits for Fracture Liaison Service.
To be competent in cannulation. Training will be provided.
To work towards knowledge and skills to undertake intravenous therapy regimes for severe osteoporosis.
To record accurately information gained, management strategies and health promotion issues in patient records.
To be able to organise own work load daily and co-ordinate activities within the unit to ensure patients are seen on time.
To be able to discuss osteoporosis risk factors and options with patients and staff on the telephone helpline, on the wards and in the unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post involves participating in all aspects of osteoporosis assessment and management.
Bone density measurements are performed by nurses to enable diagnosis and disease management.
Patient assessment following fracture allows risk factors to be identified and where possible bone health education is undertaken to minimise the risks. Following scanning, explanations are given regarding management and medication regimes.
Participation in national audit including case-finding as part of an ongoing fracture initiative in secondary care at Medway is an integral part of the work. The post holder is one of a team of nurses

Essential criteria
- 1st level registration
- ENB 998 or equivalent
- Evidence of further study/CPD
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 2 years general nursing
- Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues
- Knowledge of evidence based practice
- An understanding of audit and research based nursing practice
- An understanding of resource management
- Awareness of clinical governance and risk management issues
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 2 years general nursing
- Cannulation experience or willingness to participate in training
Skills
