Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Clinical Education Department as a Health Care Support Worker (HCSW) educator. 

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with a passion for education, training and development. For this post, the individual should have substantial experience in the acute health care setting and have excellent interpersonal skills.

The successful applicant will join a compassionate, innovative and knowledgeable team and work closely with the HCSW Practice Development Nurses (PDNs) to support HCSWs across all disciplines throughout the Trust.

The post holder will be required to work across both Darent Valley Hospital and Queen Mary’s Hospital and be flexible with their working hours to incorporate supporting HCSW that may do shift work. The post holder will work closely and collaboratively with the PDNs to ensure that the HCSW workforce at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust is skilled, compassionate and driven to provide outstanding patient care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be:

Required to assist with all aspects of the education and development of HCSWs. This will include the facilitation and delivery of the induction and development programme for HCSWs, support with identified training needs and assist HCSWs in the completion of the Care Certificate and other educational programmes

Support the Education team in championing and coordinating the development of new and existing HCSWs within the Trust

Responsible for assisting all HCSWs who are new to the Trust to complete the Care Certificate within the first 12 weeks of employment

Responsible for providing pastoral care and developing supportive networks for all HCSWs within the Trust

Responsible for aiding existing HCSWs to complete any required competencies to be able to deliver excellent patient care

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities: to include level of responsibility for:

Work alongside new and existing HCSWs in the clinical area.

Maintain contact and familiarity with current clinical practice.

Ensure that all advice and guidance given to staff is in adherence with clinical policies and protocols.

Promote effective and respectful communication with patients and clients in the clinical area.

Understand the boundaries of the HCSW role and support them to work within their scope of practice.

Support the coordination, facilitation and completion of the Care Certificate and facilitate and assist in the delivery of the HCSW induction and development programme.

Support HCSWs in the clinical area to complete their Care Certificate, helping them from appointment to completion, ensuring adequate monitoring and documentation.

Provide feedback on clinical performance observed to reinforce skills and identify areas for development.

Support the PDNs to identify and promote any appropriate apprenticeships for the HCSWs and sign post them to the apprenticeship manager. 

Promote the use of an allocated ‘buddy’ to support HCSW who are new to the Trust and signpost them to an appropriate member of staff to sign off any relevant competencies.

Education and Training

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of general education including Maths and English GCSE or equivalent.
  • Completion of Care certificate
  • Level 3 Health and social care apprenticeship or equivalent
  • Evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Able to plan, prioritise & manage an allocated workload
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of the Trust values and role model these in practice
  • Able to demonstrate an understanding of evidence-based and patient-centred care
  • Able to work independently and as part of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Basic IT skills including Microsoft Excel
  • Able to maintain clear accurate records
  • Vision of career plan in relation to education
  • Completion of the BEACH course
  • Good organisational and time management skills
Desirable criteria
  • Completed leadership module/course
  • Cannulation and phlebotomy
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Power point and Outlook)
  • Completed QI foundation training
  • Link worker within their ward/department

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience of working in an acute healthcare setting
  • Evidence of supporting learners/peers in practice
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in teaching and designing induction process
