There is an exciting opportunity for an experienced midwife, who is passionate about midwifery and leadership to join our team of highly skilled midwives at Crowborough Birth Centre. We are looking for a dynamic, motivated and forward thinking midwife to provide effective leadership as ward manager, be a role model of excellent midwifery practice and demonstrate a commitment in supporting colleagues to provide personalised care and a positive pregnancy and birth experience particularly within an out of hospital setting. She/he will have good communication and expert midwifery skills, committed to giving high-quality care, challenge practice and support individual focused care.

As the ward manager you will co-ordinate the day to day running of the Birth centre, which provides care for low-risk women/birthing people in labour and in the immediate post-natal period, as well as antenatal care and telephone advice.

There is a requirement to provide an on-call to support the management on call rota.

This role requires you to be the overall leader and work as part of a small team at a stand alone Birth Centre. This involves close relationships with community staff ensuring a safe provision of care. You will need to demonstrate good leadership skills and sound understanding of co-ordinating a stand alone birth centre. You will liaise with senior management team on a daily basis.

Experience of working in a low risk midwifery environment, particularly a Birth Centre is essential for this role. Additionally we are looking for someone who is highly skilled in the management of obstetric emergencies both in and out of the hospital environment. Previous experience at Band 7 level is required as this role entails working independently from the main obstetric unit.

The Trust provides a full range of general hospital services and some areas of specialist complex care to around 760,000 people living in the south part of West Kent and the north part of East Sussex.

The Trust’s core catchment areas are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells and their surrounding boroughs. We work from two main clinical sites: Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. Tunbridge Wells Hospital opened in 2011 and provides single rooms with en-suites for all in-patients – the first of its kind in the country.

We employ more than 7,000 full and part-time staff in a huge range of clinical and non-clinical roles across both of our hospital sites.

Once your pre-employment checks have been completed you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date which will be in line with one of our Corporate Inductions.

Following your Corporate Induction you will be expected to attend the Trust’s 2-week Induction Programme for RNs, NAs, RMs, ODPs and Paramedics.  The programme is full-time (please email [email protected] if this is problematic) and will involve travel to both Trust sites. The programme includes supernumerary shifts in the clinical area, classroom-based sessions and e-learning.

Please note that appointment to this post will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at Enhanced Level. (Enhanced level now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children)

  • Post-graduate level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development in relevant area of speciality supplemented by specialist clinical, managerial training and CPD
  • Mentorship Course
  • Management qualification or equivalent experience
  • RN1/ RN2/ RN12 or RN Child Registered Midwife on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality

  • To hold a range of management courses

Experience

  • Experience of managing an area; including management of rotas, resources, budgets and staff.
  • Experience in staff / practice development including undertaking appraisals and Personal development plans.
  • Experience of audit / research-based midwifery practice.
  • Experience of resource management.
  • Experience of Clinical Supervision.

Skills

  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues.
  • Awareness of government led and professional issues relating to midwifery / women and birthing people centred care.
  • Ability to identify women and birthing people and staff issues and proactive in addressing of these.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of clinical governance and risk management and how this effects their role and the department.
  • Ability to administer prescribed medication including blood products
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and team working skills.

  • Ability to use and understand Electronic Patient Records (EPR).
