Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post entails the delivery of the pilot in East & North Herts by undertaking the following:

Gathering locality data to provide a baseline against which to measure project outcomes

- numbers, current practice vs best practice guidelines and other relevant measures (e.g. incidence of CAUTI)

Measuring the impact of TWOCs undertaken by Bladder & Bowel Clinical Nurse Specialist vs non-specialist staff

Evaluating any lessons learnt in regard to improving the quality of care, patient experience (including quality of life), reduction in risk (of repeated catheterisations, CAUTI, impact on tissue integrity by repeated blocking and bypassing etc)

Producing comprehensive recommendations

Collaborating with the Catheter Care Quality Improvement team and feed into the QI plan

   To be responsible for the care of all equipment personally issued and used in line with departmental protocols and organisational policies and monitor /maintain stock levels

o   To support and participate in quality improvement systems and reporting mechanisms to assure safe and effective patient care and a positive patient experience.

o   To actively participate in the business development of the service area facilitating growth, contract compliance and a positive high profile for the service.

o   To be aware of, and abide by, professional guidelines (NICE/DOH/RCN etc.), HCT policies and local policies, procedures and standards

The post holder will work autonomously, demonstrating effective management, clinical and leadership skills through advanced clinical practice, management, education, research, audit and professional activities.

  The post holder will be required to undertake frequent periods of concentration to develop complex care plans, patient assessment and treatment. There may be frequent interruption to respond to requests from other staff and responding to deadlines.

o   The post holder will have direct exposure to highly distressing or emotional information and circumstances (e.g. sexual abuse, Safeguarding, poor prognosis complaints and serious incidents) including managing staff concerns and issues affecting performance,  

o   The postholder will occasionally be exposed to unpleasant working conditions such as verbal aggression.

o   The postholder will occasionally be exposed to highly unpleasant body fluids

o   The postholder will be required to carry clinical and other equipment such as laptops short distances using light to moderate effort when necessary.

o   The postholder will be involved in the moving and positioning of patients and the equipment for treatment on a daily basis

To promote the reporting of untoward incidents/accidents and participate if requested within any investigation and corrective action and respond to complaints as requested.

o   To maintain a clinical caseload of patients with bladder/bowel dysfunction and management of continence, providing a high standard of patient focussed quality care by utilising advanced knowledge and highly developed clinical reasoning skills to accurately determine clinical diagnosis and prognosis in situations where conflicting evidence is present, and provide ongoing support to professionals, patients, families and carers

o   To work autonomously with a wide range of patients including those with specialised care needs due to neuropathic bladder/bowel dysfunction and other chronic long-term conditions.

o   To be accountable for specific managerial responsibilities within the team including recruitment and retention and deputise for the Bladder & Bowel Clinical Lead  as directed.

o   To lead and/or participate in the Bladder & Bowel Service training programme via the Learning & Development Department.

o   To support and prepare performance reports at the frequency of local and national requirements as requested.

o   To participate in audit and research supporting this both within the service as requested.
