Are you a qualified nurse or midwife and interested in training as a Health Visitor then we would like to hear from you. 

As a Health Visitor in Herefordshire, you can make a real difference to children and families. You will play a role in delivering the Healthy Child Programme and tacking important public health issues. Everyday working as a Health Visitor is different and this can include home visits, clinic contacts and working with a range of professionals from early years and social care to children centres.  The post holder must have a strong public health focus and be fully committed to improving the health and wellbeing of families and children in Herefordshire.

The Specialist Community and Public Health Nursing post is funded for 12 months and we will be working  with Birmingham City University, the post will be commencing in February 2025 and is 50% in practice and 50% theory. The requirements for the course are that:

  • You are first level registered nurse or midwife with the NMC
  • For Level 7 study you must have a health-related degree (Nursing or Midwifery) 

The post holder must have a full driving license and access to a car for work purposes. 

Please note this is a 12-month fixed term contract. 

Main duties of the job

To undertake the Specialist Community and Public Health Nursing (Health Visitor) training to develop the skills and knowledge required to practice safely and effectively. 

The student Health Visitor will be a key member of the health visiting team and ensure the delivery of safe, effective and high quality services to children and families using evidence based research. 

The student will take responsibility for maximising their learning experience and fully integrate theory into practice in order to obtain the skills and qualifications to meet the required standard for registration as a Health Visitor with the NMC.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE or equivalent qualification
  • Relevant child care or Health and Social Care qualification (at least NVQ Level 3)
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Ability to seek support and refer issues appropriately
  • Computer literate able to use PowerPoint, Word and Excel effectively
