 An excellent opportunity has arisen for a full time Band 3 Senior Health Care Assistant to work in the Southampton Dermatology Centre based at the Royal South Hants Hospital. The Southampton Dermatology Centre operates from 08.00 – 18.00 Monday to Friday, with some optional out of hours/ weekend working.  You will be assisting in the management of the smooth running of the various consultant and nurse-led clinics within the Dermatology Department and Medical Outpatients Department and assisting the clinicians in our Day Case surgical rooms.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Work in a team of nursing staff and clinicians, ensuring high standards of care are developed and maintained within that team.
  • To give and receive regular reports on the progress of patients, immediately acting on any changes in the patient’s condition, and reporting them to the relevant health care professional. 
  • Assist consultant surgeons in the day case surgery operating rooms as well as the nurse surgeons in their operating lists.
  • Facilitate the smooth running of various clinics (including Medical Outpatients) and chaperone patients when necessary.  
  • Assist clinicians during clinics, taking clinical photographs, and observations, helping patients with undressing/dressing and mobilisation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Dermatology Department offers various services and clinics such as UVL treatment, photo testing, Botox, patch, 2 week skin cancer pathway, and vulval clinics. Many of our clinics are nurse-led such as acne, topical treatments, ultraviolet light therapy, allergy patch testing, mole mapping and wound clinics.  

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in some of these clinics and to chaperone patients.  You will also run the admission and recovery area when there are Day Case surgical patients, take observations and provide aftercare information.  You will also have the opportunity to assist the Dermatology Surgeons in the operating rooms.

Be responsible for the smooth flow of various daily clinics as well as answering queries from patients/relatives on the telephone and for providing care and advice to support and facilitate high-quality, individualised care to patients and relatives. We also look after a small number of clinics for Medical Outpatients such as TB, Diabetes and Gastro and you will be assisting clinicians with observations and venesection to facilitate the smooth running of these clinics.

We are looking to recruit a Health Care Support worker who has a keen interest in working in the speciality of Dermatology. Previous experience is desirable however not essential as all the training required will provided.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • NVQ 3 in health and social care or equivalent
  • Numeracy and Literacy skills at level 1 or 2 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Keyboard skills
  • Experience and competent in additional clinical skills

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience in a caring role
  • Understanding of an acute hospital setting and the role of the SHCA
Desirable criteria
  • Previous HCA experience
  • Previous experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of using a computer
