Main duties of the job

The Wessex Regional Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Cancer Service is looking to appoint an enthusiastic senior sister/charge nurse to take a key role in the running and further development of the service. Based at the Southampton Cancer Centre, Southampton General Hospital (SGH). This secondment post is available immediately for 12 months to help run the C6 Teenage and Young Adult inpatient and outpatient areas.

A dedicated age appropriate facility for TYA patients (aged 16-24 years), funded by a charitable grant from the Teenage Cancer Trust, was opened at SGH in September 2013. It comprises 6 inpatient beds and 4 day care areas. The Unit serves young adult patients in the Central South Coast Region, Dorset and the Channel Islands. The post holder will be a pivotal member of the TYA multidisciplinary team which provides medical, social, psychological and emotional support to this patient population. The team comprises site specific oncology/haematology/palliative care consultants who have a specialist interest in the care of the TYA patient group, TYA nurse specialists and a lead nurse along with TYA specialist social workers and youth support workers funded by the YLvsC and the Teenage Cancer Trust. In addition, the team comprises specialist physiotherapists/occupational therapies/dietetics and psychologist. TYA nurse specialists are also based within the region providing geographical outreach.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post will offer broad experience in the care of in-patients and out-patients in the management of the full range of malignancies observed in the TYA population including acute leukaemia’s, lymphomas, sarcomas, germ-cell tumours, brain tumour and others that occur less commonly. In addition the post holder will be involved in the supervised delivery of high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell rescue and a range of clinical trials. They will carry out band 7 responsibilities, for example assisting the Matron team and Lead TYA Nurse to help facilitate the running of the unit and shift leading to ensure patient receive high quality compassionate care. Additionally, they will be part of the cancer care management team, helping to assist the care group to achieve its goals and help with objectives such as flow through our services. 

Commitment to Cancer Care rotas such as bleep shifts and working across the wider care group.
Applicants should be able to deliver SACT administration along with experience in the care of oncology or haematology patients. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a willingness to learn and work within a multidisciplinary team in changing environment, together with adaptability to clinical and service requirements.

The post has excellent educational opportunities. There are regular teaching components in clinics, ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, journal clubs and research seminars. Practical experience in chemotherapy administration and other procedures is plentiful. They will also work across both inpatient and outpatient departments within the same unit.

    13.    To involve the Matron in any untoward incidents and problems. To complete appropriate documentation in the nursing records and adverse event reports, ensuring lessons are learnt and practice change is sustained.
    14.    To develop a ward/unit culture of patient involvement both informally and through the Care Group and corporate Patient and Public Involvement objectives. 
    15.    To actively contribute to the Clinical Governance Agenda.
    16.    To be involved in and to action patient satisfaction feedback mechanisms – 360-degree feedback, staff and patient satisfaction surveys.
    17.    To be responsive and to address patient’s concerns at an early stage.
    18.    To participate in the investigation of complaints as required, reporting the nature of any complaint and the investigation of findings to the Matron.
    19.    To be able to demonstrate changes in practice as a result of complaints and incidents.
    20.    To have an overview, when bleep-holding for designated ward/unit areas, of resources required to deliver safe patient care and to re-deploy staff to ensure equity across designated ward/unit areas.
    21.    To maintain effective communication with other key stakeholders.
    22.    To monitor the rostering of the nursing staff to ensure best utilisation of the agreed workforce levels while maintaining an appropriate skill mix for the ward/unit. 
    23.    To ensure that all staff promote safe custody of patients’ property and valuables.
    24.    To act up for the matron in their absence.
    25.    Cover WLS / SPOC / bleep holder role as per agreed rota.
    26.    To be familiar with human resources policies and procedures and ensure implementation and adherence to policies.
    27.    To lead on recruitment and retention for designated ward/unit areas.
    28.    To be responsible for the development of staff in preparation for succession planning.
