Main duties of the job

The Wessex Regional Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Cancer Service is looking to appoint an enthusiastic ward sister/charge nurse to take a key role in the leadership and further development of the ward and day unit service based at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS.) 

Our unit is a dedicated age appropriate facility for TYA patients (aged 16-24 years), funded by a charitable grant from the Teenage Cancer Trust and was opened at UHS in September 2013. It comprises of 6 inpatient beds and 4 day care facilities. The unit serves young adult patients in the Central South Coast Region, Dorset and the Channel Islands.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post will offer broad experience in the care of in-patients and out-patients in the management of the full range of malignancies observed in the TYA population including acute leukaemia’s, lymphomas, sarcomas, germ-cell tumours, brain tumour and others that occur less commonly. In addition the post holder will be involved in the supervised delivery of high-dose chemotherapy and immunotherapy with stem cell rescue and a range of clinical trials. 

They will carry out band 6 responsibilities, for example assisting the ward manager to help facilitate the running of the unit and shift leading to ensure patients receive high quality compassionate care.
Commitment to cancer care rotas such as bleep shifts and working across the wider care group will also be required in this role.

Applicants should be senior nurses who are able to deliver SACT administration along with experience in the care of oncology and haematology patients. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a willingness to learn and work within a multidisciplinary team in a changing environment, together with adaptability to clinical and service requirements.

The post has excellent educational opportunities. There are regular teaching components in clinics, ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, journal clubs and research seminars. Practical experience in chemotherapy administration and other procedures is plentiful. They will also work across both inpatient and outpatient departments within the same unit.

Additional Working for your organisation: 

The post holder will be a pivotal member of the TYA multidisciplinary team which provides nursing, medical, social, psychological and emotional support to this patient population. Our MDT consists of site specific oncology/haematology/palliative consultants who have a specialist interest in the care of the TYA patients. We also have TYA nurse specialists, a TYA Lead nurse, a TYA ACP, TYA specialist social workers and youth support workers. 

As a Trust, we support flexible working where the needs of the service allow and you’ll have an opportunity to discuss this at interview. We support study days, levels 5-7 and conferences within cancer care. We also facilitate in house training including fundamentals of cancer care and TYA specific study days.
