Job overview

The Band 6 role is the key supporting function to the Band 7 to enable the optimal care of our patients and to the success of our Trust. The delivery of high quality, effective and compassionate care is the most important role within the organisation.

The Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse will be working within DTC Theatres and will be accountable to the DTC Theatres Sisters, working within the Surgical Division.

Main duties of the job

  • Experienced practitioner in theatres
  • Day to day operational management of your theatre list and staff. To support the Band 7 in the delivery of the service by the team or area that you are responsible for or have been delegated the responsibility
  • High standards of Professional Practice to ensure quality and safety of patient care, experience and the patient journey
  • Monitoring key quality and performance indicators and service pressures and recommending /implementing actions to address them
  • Ensuring necessary / appropriate equipment is available for management treatment needs of the patients covered within the ward area
  • Reporting on workforce requirements for meeting service demand
  • Line management of staff working within the service area
  • Responsible for staff supervision, annual appraisal, management of attendance and performance, and identifying and facilitating staff training needs
  • Supporting the Band 7 in ensuring that clinical services are delivered to a high quality of care and that all compliance requirements such as CQC and contractual requirements are achieved

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate a good command of the English Language both written and verbal
  • Professional UK registration e.g. NMC, HPC
  • Degree level education or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through any combination of alternative study, or employment experience
  • Level 3 Certificate/Diploma in Management and Leadership, or equivalent eg NVQ 3, experience
  • Teaching and Assessing Qualification or equivalent study or work experience
  • Formal training &/or experience in mentorship
Desirable criteria
  • Degree level education or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through any combination of alternative study, or employment experience

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of Continued Professional Development (CPD) clearly recorded for professional profile
  • Completed clinical placements in a variety of areas
  • Knowledge of the management of in-patients and outpatients including evidence based strategies.
  • Knowledge and experience of a range of approaches to the management of patients utilising clinical reasoning.
  • Multidisciplinary team working
  • Understanding of Health Environment policies and legislation including Clinical, HR, E&D, Governance
  • Adherence to current statutory requirements, standards and regulations
  • Awareness of local and national agenda within the speciality
