Paediatric Diabetic Nurse Specialist,  Band 6 (30 hours a week)

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join us as a Band 5/6 nurse depending on experience   to add to the current Paediatric Diabetes Team. Contracted hours 30 hours per week.

The Paediatric Diabetes team currently look after 290 children and young people with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.  The team have a collaborative approach to care with good working relationships within the multi-disciplinary team.

The team supports inpatients based at Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT) and outpatient clinics based at GHNHSFT and Cheltenham General Hospital and Cirencester Hospital.

The diabetes team deliver structured education at diagnosis for children and young people and their families as well as ongoing education.  The team also deliver education for ward staff, doctors, nurseries, schools and other health care professionals.

Main duties of the job

As a nurse working within a specialist team, you will hold NMC registration.

As a member of the paediatric diabetes team, you will be responsible for the delivery of high quality, holistic evidence-based care to children, young people and their families.   

You will need to have relevant diabetes experience, however diabetes training will be given.  Excellent communication skills and the ability to assess physical and mental health in children and their families is essential.

A comprehensive understanding of safeguarding procedures is required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main responsibilities of the role include:

To act as an advocate for children and young people with diabetes.

Provide an effective, holistic and developmental approach to diabetes care from infancy to adolescence, within the acute and outreach setting and in conjunction with the specialist consultant and the adult diabetes service; providing a cross county service.

To support and participate in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of high quality nursing care.

Work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

To manage a caseload of patients within a defined area.

To act as an autonomous practitioner within the trust, providing a local link to the wider networks for identified speciality.

To provide training in all aspects of paediatric diabetes care to all members of multi-disciplinary teams in secondary and primary care.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RSCN/RN (Child) with the Nursing Midwifery Council
  • Degree level, specialist training or equivalent experience, i.e. Childhood and Young Person Diabetes Care Module or similar course.
Desirable criteria
  • Appropriate teaching/assessing qualification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • IT skills e.g. Microsoft office, Trak, Infoflex
Desirable criteria
  • Enhanced levels of knowledge, dexterity and accuracy pertaining to clinical skills e.g. subcutaneous insulin injections using variety of equipment depending upon patient needs, intra muscular injections and blood glucose testing
  • Ensure personal and professional development is progressed through individual Performance Development Review and PREP guidelines

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate experience in paediatric nursing
  • Appropriate teaching/assessing experience
  • Current driving license.
