About the job

The successful candidate will be supporting the departments sisters for all aspects of the role, including; managing junior staff, managing and delivering individual patient care and co-ordinating clinics and clinic allocations. Support cross site service in both of the Orthopaedic and Fracture clinics, with your primary base being Gloucester Royal Hospital
Part of the role will be to assess complex wounds, supporting ongoing staff and patient education, take part in audits to help improvement patient and staff experience.

Across the both sites we have 28 Consultants who specialisms in hand, feet, shoulders, hips, spines and knees. We are friendly and professional team who work with a variety of other multi-disciplinary teams. We are always looking to improving our service, and have taken of several audits and studies surrounding patient centred care and patient information. We welcome new ideas, and staff’s innovations as well as training and developing our staff. There are opportunities to gain competencies in care of the cast and learn how to apply casts and splints

What we’re looking for

- NMC registered 

- Educated to degree level.

- Evidence of continuing professional development

- Registered Nurse with a minimum of one year post registration experience desirable but not essential.

- Wide variety of general nursing skills relevant to the different clinic specialities using the department

- Communication skills e.g. negotiation & influencing skills, in order to manage challenging situations and people.

- Ability to facilitate and support learning in practice.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Team worker and work effectively as a member of our multi-disciplinary team

- The ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care with the multidisciplinary team.

- Communicate effectively especially where patient ability to do so is compromised.  An ability to disseminate contentious and delicate information appropriately.

- To deliver safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using equipment and resources safely and as appropriate throughout the cross county service provision.

- To administer medication and treatment within Procedure for the Ordering, Prescribing and Administration of Medication Guidelines.

- To deliver and receive information which may cause emotional distress to all parties.

- Participate in mentorship and educational programmes for students and other members of the team.

- To adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and professional code of conduct. To assist the department sisters in the implementation of policy and service.

- Responsible for the supervision and mentorship for unqualified/qualified staff and students.

- To input and retrieve patient information from computer based system and maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records.

- Supports multi-professional within the department, advising patients on pre-operative and post-operative care including wound care.

- Undertake specific delegated tasks following the appropriate training and competency level e.g.  application of simple off the shelf splints and braces, remove plaster casts, record ECG, MRSA screening and venepuncture, arranging admission of patients to wards from clinic.

- Undertake all aspects of the role expectations and requirements Undertake the British Orthopaedic Association Course (BOA)

- Prior to the commencement of the BOA Casting Course i.e., working in the plaster room

- Undertake the Ponseti Course and work closely with the Lead physiotherapist to gain competency in applying the cast 

- Competency and confidence in applying splints, braces, boots, shoes including education

- Competency and confidence using and maintaining the plaster saw including other plaster equipment

- Motivating and engaging colleagues to ensure all of the multi-disciplinary team make a full contribution to the divisional clinical governance agenda across two hospital sites.

- Working to tight internal or external deadlines.

- Able to adapt quickly to changing priorities and time scales.

- Overcoming scepticism, antagonism, hostility and resistance to the principles and benefits of risk management.

- Exposure to verbal aggression and resistance during incident investigation.

- Dealing with difficult situations and people.

Keeping abreast of national recommendations and guidance and ensuring compliance in a timely manner
