Gynaecology Cancer Nurse Specialist Band 6 full time

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Registered Nurse with an interest in women’s health and cancer to join our Gynaecology Cancer Nursing team

We are looking for an enthusiastic & motivated individual who has experience in gynaecology & /or cancer care. The post holder needs to be able to liaise with a multi-disciplinary team & also work independently. Compassion & excellent communication skills are essential, & the ability to adapt to challenging & changing service need including project work & setting up of nurse-led clinics

This job is predominantly in Cheltenham General Hospital however you will be expected to work across site, in Gloucester Royal Hospital. Working hours are currently 08:30 & 16:30hrs Monday to Friday. We would consider a job share (Monday to Friday, start time 08:00 or 08:30hrs)

Following training to assist in the delivery of an expert nursing service for gynaecology oncology

To provide expert nursing advice, support & compassion to patients, their families & other healthcare professionals

To manage own patient caseload within nurse led clinics - under supervision (direct and indirect) senior member of the team

To be actively involved in gynaecology oncology in-patient care, liaising with ward staff to ensure high quality nursing care

To be a point of contact/key worker for patients diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer pre-diagnosis, at diagnosis & during treatment & the follow up period, either face-to-face or via the telephone

Utilise advanced communication skills when discussing diagnosis, prognosis & treatment options for gynaecological cancers with sensitivity & expertise

To maintain effective links within primary secondary & tertiary care to ensure effective communication

The gynaecology cancer service is predominantly based in Cheltenham General  (CGH) with some of the out-patient work and also patients who come in via an emergency pathway,  based at Gloucester Royal Hospital (GRH)

Recognised and proven interest in cancer, in particular women’s health and gynaecological cancers

To achieve a range of clinical competencies as required within the Trust and Care Group.

To provide expert nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals

To manage own patient caseload within nurse led clinics - under supervision (direct and indirect) of the Gynaecology Clinical Cancer Nurse Specialists/Consultant

To be actively involved in gynaecology oncology in-patient care, liaising with ward staff to ensure high quality nursing care, in accordance with Trust standards and policies

To attend relevant MDT meetings and actively contribute

To assist in the delivery of a seamless service through Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) processes and communication

To ensure all care is given in accordance with agreed protocols

To follow-up patients under supervision as appropriate and ensure all relevant information is available to enable patients to make an informed choice about their treatment

To act as a resource person to others, providing accurate information, advice and support to the multidisciplinary team, patients and their relatives.

To be able to recognise emergency situations and take appropriate action in regard to cardiac arrest, fire and major incident

Be familiar with relevant computerised systems integral to the service, such as trak, infoflex and EPR

Evidence of communication and interpersonal skills, psychosexual counselling awareness and ability to manage own time and work autonomously

Support the Patient Support Group for patients, relatives and carers with a gynaecological cancer diagnosis

Contribute to the multi-disciplinary discussion, management and co-ordination of a specialist nursing service caring for patients

To network with the team of clinical nurse specialists within the Trust to evaluate and promote the specialist-nursing role.

To maintain effective links within primary secondary and tertiary care to ensure effective communication

Complete documentation to a high standard

Deal with difficult situations including patients who are upset or angry; provide compassion to colleagues and patients and their families.

To ensure a positive focused service incorporating patient’s feedback to maintain and improve patient care.

Ensure patients and their carers have access to up-to-date information/literature on their cancer, treatment options and services available

To be able to disseminate highly sensitive, distressing or contentious information to patients and family members/carers and staff as appropriate frequently in clinical environments lacking in privacy

Facilitate effective communication and co-ordinate referral of patients and carers to appropriate support services and community Trusts to promote a seamless service and thus reduce/avoid admissions and reduce length of stay to the acute Trust

Visit the ward areas and review patients, where appropriate, providing support and information relevant to their care

Attend ward rounds when and if required and meetings relevant to the management of the service or unit and feedback the relevant content to colleagues
