Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for the role of Matron within our Adult Inpatient Unit at our modern Fair Havens hospice, overlooking beautiful Priory Park.

The ideal candidate will provide operational management, and clinical leadership for our Adult Inpatient Service, which currently consists of 10 open beds, with a team of approximately 50 staff.

You will be expected to provide professional and effective clinical leadership and accountability for the Adult Inpatient Service with a paramount focus on patient safety and quality care.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • To work within and inform the policy framework of the Adult Inpatient Service in the provision of palliative and supportive care by leading the team in ensuring that the aims and objectives of the organisation are met.
  • The post holder will have a key leadership role at senior level and will provide palliative care knowledge and advanced leadership skills to ensure the delivery of care within the Adult Inpatient Service as part of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).
  • The post holder will have direct clinical involvement in the care delivered within the Adult Inpatient Service and take 24-hour responsibility for the overall clinical management of the unit in collaboration with the Registered Manager.
  • Lead in developing a patient and family led service whilst maintaining and improving clinical standards within the Adult Inpatient Service.
  • Identify where existing standards should be updated and highlight new developments in practice to all clinical areas across the organisation.
  • Act as a senior nursing leader within the organisation and as such be involved in the investigation of incidents, supporting peers in other departments, and providing a role model to colleagues across the organisation.
  • Accountable for managing the control of expenditure within a defined budget and work with the Head of Adult Services to regularly review productivity and expenditure.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with the NMC
  • Educated to Degree Level
Desirable criteria
  • Masters Degree
  • Palliative Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience at a senior level (Band 7 minimum)
  • Experience of leadership and management at senior level (Band 7 minimum)
  • Awareness of NICE Guidance
  • Awareness of CQC standards and inspection routines
  • Experience of working with palliative care patients, or those at end of life. This experience can have been gained in a variety of settings and is not restricted to that within hospice care.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in a patient safety role with an understanding of the principles that underpin approaches to improving patient safety.

Key Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge of key patient safety metrics.
  • Commitment to clinical excellence through continued professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of working within set budgets
