Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity for a part-time 28 hours per week, band 7 Children and Young Person's Safeguarding Nurse to join the safeguarding team based at Southend Hospital.
The safeguarding nurse will use expert knowledge to provide specialist advice to staff, peers, other professionals, and multi-agency partners on all aspects of safeguarding children and unborn babies. Supporting the Safeguarding Associate Director, the Named Nurse and the Named Midwife for Safeguarding Children to fulfil MSE responsibilities as set out in the Working Together to Safeguard Children document.
Main duties of the job
- The Children and Young Person's Safeguarding Nurse will provide support and supervision to all staff on issues relating to the safeguarding of children and unborn babies and to will provide a role model for safe, competent and professional practice in relation to the safeguarding of children.
- The post holder will assist in the planning process and will deliver training for staff in all aspects of children’s safeguarding and will participate in the development and delivery of a training strategy.
- The post holder will participate in policy development across all aspects of safeguarding children and will assist with the implementation into practice of all relevant national and local safeguarding recommendations and guidance.
- The Children and Young Person's Safeguarding Nurse will work with MSE staff and external partners to ensure that the wellbeing of children and unborn babies is safeguarded.
- The Children and Young Person's Safeguarding Nurse will provide operational management of cases involving any child or young person who is an inpatient on one of our 3 hospital sites where there are child protection concerns in order to ensure effective multidisciplinary and interagency risk assessment, decision making and development of safeguarding plans and actions.

The post is site specific however, MSE covers a wide footprint area therefore the successful candidate's needs to be willing to travel to other sites on an occasional basis.
The hours of work for this role are 08:00-18:00

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered on part 1, 2,7,8,10,11 or15 of the NMC register.
- 1st degree in relevant subject or demonstrating equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- Safeguarding Children training at level 4
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Extensive knowledge of local and national child protection procedures demonstrating experience of application of these procedures in safeguarding practice.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of the working safeguarding practice in an acute trust
Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of extensive experience of managing Child Protection and complex safeguarding cases involving children/young people and unborn babies
- Experience of multi-agency working
Desirable criteria
- Experience of supervision of staff and line management experience
- Previous experience of working in an acute hospital trust
