·        To lead and deliver patient centred care aligned with the trust vision and collaborating for care strategy

·        To support and assist the Ward Manager to provide continuing responsibility for the ward.

·        To provide leadership and support to the unit nursing team

·        In the absence of the Ward Manager, to assume responsibility for the management and support of the unit..

·        To deliver a high standard of evidence based care to acute inpatient service users.

·        To ensure the optimum level of safe and effective care within the allocated resources

·        Act as a resource and source of expertise to the unit team

·        Support the unit team to build on their practice, help staff to progress their career and enhance their expertise through robust supervision and access to training and development

·        To ensure a continuously improving service, in line with the clinical governance framework, Trust objectives, and the NHS performance framework

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

·       Use clinical skills and knowledge to provide specialist advice and support to peer group staff, patients and relatives.

·       Act as a clinical expert and positive role model for all staff.

·       Provide professional leadership, advice and guidance to nursing and non-nursing staff, within the nursing environment and foster collaborative partnerships with other disciplines within the nursing environment. 

·       Lead and develop the supervision and management of clinical nursing practice within the area of responsibility to ensure safe and effective holistic evidenced based care.

·       Lead in the development of clinical standards ensuring these are set, embedded and monitored in accordance with the needs of the service in conjunction with the ward manger.

·       Responsible for the assessment implementation and evaluation of care plans for individual service users.

·       Work as a key worker advising and supporting colleagues as required

·       To take charge of the unit in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility, this includes the role of bed manager for the unit.

·       To teach and supervise the team, including qualified, non-qualified and learners.

·       Responsible for reporting to the Team Manager (or nominated deputy) any circumstances that may affect the delivery of care and / or efficient running of the ward.

·       Ensure all staff adhere to Trust Policies and Procedures

What is Staff Bank?

Our EPUT NHS staff bank is an entity managed by the trust that hires clinical and non-clinical healthcare professionals to take on shifts at our trust hospitals and community settings. Here at EPUT we maintain our own bank of specialist staff to ensure that we are able offer safe and effective care at all times.

All our permanent staff are automatically enrolled onto the staff bank however this does not mean you have to work any additional shifts, but the option is there for you if you wish.

If you are joining our Trust in a fixed term role, please indicate on your New Starter Paperwork that you wish to join our staff bank.

·       Assist the Ward Manager in the day to day operation of the clinical area, and the development of the team.

·       Ensure that the environment is clean, pleasant and comfortable and suitable for its use at all times, taking action as appropriate to ensure high standards are maintained. Adhering to Infection Control and PLACE requirement.

·       Assist in the management of human resources, by preparing duty rotas, planning annual leave, study leave, mandatory courses and monitor sickness and absence in accordance with policy. This is to ensure that the clinical area is adequately and appropriately staffed at all times in order to meet the changing demands of the service. Provide statistical information as required.

·       Contribute to the development of the service by participating in forums/ steering groups/ meetings as required.

·       Work collaboratively as a Key Worker within the multidisciplinary team, acting as a role model for good practice; this includes liaising with associated professionals and other agencies, and offering support and guidance to clinical team as necessary.

·       Ensure that service user centred care plans are developed, implemented, evaluated and recorded. Monitor the standard of care plans, ensuring that they are relevant and up to date.

·       Facilitate ward / unit activities.

·       Participate in the assessment of service users who present in crisis during the 24 hour period, liaising with other services as required.

·       Ensure effective and therapeutic communication with service users, carers, visitors and staff. Make effective use of evidence based practice in day to day clinical practice.

·       Implement and ensure effective use of the Mental Health Act 1983 and Mental Capacity Act where necessary. Represent nursing team and provide reports for Manager’s Hearings and Mental Health Act Tribunals.

·       Lead on the formulation of plans for the patient’s discharge and transfer from the clinical areas in line with Care Programme Approach, Community Care Act 1990 and discharge policy.

·       Ensure adherence to Trust policies and procedures at all times. Assist with the development and/or revision of policies and procedures as necessary.

·       Supervise and monitor the use of supplies and equipment ensuring supplies are adequate and used appropriately. Assist in the maintenance of financial records as necessary.

·       Participate in teaching programmes with all staff including students. Have an awareness of own development and training needs. Maintain a learning environment. Assist in the induction of new staff. Participate in Performance Appraisal.

·       Participate in Clinical and Management supervision, providing structured and regular meetings with identified nurses. Participate in Preceptorship programme, the Teaching and Assessing of nursing students, and the Mentorship of unqualified staff including Associate Practitioners.

·       Undertake role of shift co-ordinator and unit nurse, ensuring that resources are used effectively, monitor duty rota to ensure that staffing is adequate in relation to ward requirements and that if required staff are redeployed as necessary within the unit.

·       Undertake other link roles for specified areas as required, including Infection Control, Health and Safety, PALS liaison and Student Placements.

·       Take a lead and support colleagues in interventions relating to the management of violence and aggression, including de-escalation techniques and the use of physical intervention (TASI) as necessary.

·       Participate in the selection and recruitment of new staff as required.

·       Undertake investigations in accordance with Patient Safety Incident Reporting Framework (PSIRF) in the absence of the senior nurse. Deal with complaints as appropriate.

·       Ensure staff are aware of Trust Fire Procedure, may be required to act as Fire Officer in the absence of senior clinician.

·       Ability to work flexibly over a 24 hour period in order to meet the operational requirements of the unit.

·       Undertake any additional duties deemed appropriate to grade.

·       Communicate policies and procedures within the service and externally to ensure effective understanding and implementation.

·       Maintain effective relationships with members of the Trust and other statutory and voluntary organisations.
