Job overview
At Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust (PAHT) we are currently expanding our bereavement services in line with the National Bereavement Care Pathway. This means we will have two specilaist midwives to support delivery of the service. PAHT is on a trajectory to be a health care leader and our bereavement services will be part of that journey . Sensitivity and compassion are essential in this role along with a vision and drive to achieve outstanding care.
The bereavement midwife acts as a clinical specilaist providing verbal and written information to bereaved families and to support women/birthing people and their families who have experienced fetal loss and/or childbirth related difficulties
To provide support to midwifery and medical staff within the Directorate when caring for women/birthing people experiencing a loss in pregnancy, stillbirth or early neonatal death.
To act as an educational resource for medical, nursing and midwifery staff on physical, psychological, and administrative aspects of bereavement care. In addition, this role is to provide support and training for staff in bereavement related issues
Main duties of the job
To deliver a confidential support service to women/birthing people and their partners following fetal loss and/or childbirth related difficulties.
To coordinate the Bereavement service offered to newly bereaved parents, liaising with all members of the team to ensure that an efficient and high-quality service is provided. To give emotional and psychological support to bereaved parents and the staff involved in their care and act as an advocate for the women/birthing people in our care. This support may be initiated during pregnancy, in labour or following the birth/death of the baby.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Midwife currently registered with the NMC
- Mentorship qualification/Practice Assessor qualification
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate study relevant to role
Experience
Essential criteria
- 3 or more years post-registration experience
- Experience across all areas of clinical maternity care
Desirable criteria
- Experience providing direct care to bereaved families
- Experience in caseload midwifery care
- Experience in guideline development and audit
- Experience in working with the multi-disciplinary team to provide timely, effective and person centered care
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Awareness of the national agenda and priorities in relation to Bereavement Care in Maternity Services
Desirable criteria
- Managerial or leadership qualification
- Experience in managing a ward or team
Personal qualities
Essential criteria
- Able to prioritise own workload effectively
- Able to work independently and without direct supervision to manage and co-ordinate patient care
- Passionate about provding an excellent standard of care to our women and birthing people who have suffered the loss of a baby
- Able to work on call
- Able to work flexibly in collaboration with the wider team
- Knowledge of the Trust values
