 Colchester Hospital has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Senior Operating Department Practitioner to join our caring, supportive, and compassionate team. This post is ideal if you are passionate about your profession and committed to delivering high-quality patient focused care.

Our theatre suites comprise of 17 theatres. One inpatient theatre is a hybrid vascular theatre used for vascular & interventional radiological procedures, 3 new state of the art robotic system for abdominal & pelvic surgery and 3 theatres are integrated for Laparoscopic use.

You will receive excellent in-house training to support all areas of working across Anaesthetics. 

A flexible approach to working shifts is required. our shift patterns are: 

07:45-18:00, 07:45-20:00, 19:45-08:00

Including on call: 07:30-1930, 19:30-07:30

This will include 7 day week cover

Main duties of the job

  • You will assist to co-ordinate the provision of a timely, high standard, cost effective & safe Elective/Emergency theatre service, developing collaborative relationships between the multi-professional team and geographical areas, which supports the patient’s journey
  • You will work alongside the Clinical Theatre Leads under the direction of the Theatres Matron to ensure that through continuous quality assurance, services are modernised to provide a positive patient experience and improved staff satisfaction.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 2 years proven post registration of Band 5 Practitioner
  • Evidence of attending and applying into practice training related to anaesthetics
  • Acquired level of knowledge and skills sufficient to provide 24 hour service provision
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of service development or improvement project

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • ODP NVQ Level 3, DipHe with D32/33
  • Mentorship Qualification /Trust Student Assessment Course
  • Trained appraiser or willingness to obtain
  • Cell Salvage operator or willingness to obtain
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership skills/interest in learning professional development in this role

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of advanced clinical knowledge & ability underpinned by continual professional development
  • Ability to provide highly specialist clinical & technical services transferable to external locations

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills underpinned by leadership and inter - transferable across disciplines
  • The ability to prioritise with multifaceted complex situations and use developed physical skills to work at speed and with precision in emergency situations e.g. Cardiac Arrest, Code Blue / Red
  • Excellent organisational skills which demonstrate that the patient is central to the service
  • Responsible for the safe use of expensive / highly complex equipment e.g Cell salvage, ventilators, endoscopes
  • Willing and able to allocate & supervise staff including qualified staff and all other visiting professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Sound knowledge and application of national & local theatre policies and procedures
  • Contribute to the formation of new policies & procedures
