Senior Immunisation Nurse (Heathfield)

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Senior Immunisation Nurse to lead our Heathfield team within the 0-19 Sussex Immunisation Service.

The vacancy is 30 hours per week over 4 days, 8am - 4pm, year-round.

The Service vaccinates children in schools and clinics across East Sussex, West Sussex and Brighton & Hove. Although this post is based within the Heathfield team, our whole service approach requires joint working across the whole of Sussex.

We are looking for a Registered Nurse to lead one of our innovative and dynamic Immunisation teams, dedicated to improving immunisation uptake and delivering the National evidence-based Schools’ Immunisation Programmes.

The Senior Immunisation Nurse will provide day to day leadership for a team of immunisation nurses, immunisation programme assistants and admin staff under the guidance of the Clinical Leads. They will provide clinical supervision and appraisal for staff within the wider immunisation service. Previous leadership / management experience would be an advantage.

The successful applicant will ensure the smooth running and administration of nurse-led sessions in school and outreach settings and optimise the uptake of immunisations via promotion of public health strategies and close liaison with school health teams. 

As a senior member of the Immunisation Service, the post-holder will be responsible for the planning and delivery of a variety of immunisations for 0-19 year-olds following the national routine immunisation schedule. They will independently manage regular nurse led clinics for the administration of immunisations.

The Senior Immunisation Nurse will promote the health and wellbeing of children/young people and their families to ensure the provision of high quality, safe, immunisation services to children and their families.

The role encompasses responsibility for clinical delivery of vaccination and patient safety, specialist advice on immunisation issues and the opportunity to develop skills in both independent and team working.

The successful applicant will work in schools, clinics and family homes with children, young people and babies to deliver vaccinations in a safe and professional way. Engagement with hard to reach groups such as travellers and children who are looked after is another aspect of the team's remit and the band 6 responsibilities will include supporting this work in the community. Excellent communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure is essential.

We welcome applicants who can demonstrate a willingness to work flexibly and co-operatively with colleagues both within their own team and the wider multidisciplinary teams across the whole SCFT area. You will need to be motivated, conscientious and committed to supporting us to maintain high vaccination coverage across Sussex.

The immunisation service is 'paper light', meaning that we use virtual paperwork as much as possible. IT skills and experience of using computer software, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint are required. Experience of using an online e-consent platform and patient record systems, such as SystmOne would be beneficial, although full training will be provided.

The role requires working core hours of 8am – 4pm with flexibility at either end of the day for packing of vaccines and clinic cover, on a rota basis within the team.

All team members support the whole of the SCFT Immunisation Service therefore you must be a car owner/driver and be willing to travel to clinics and schools within Sussex.

  • Evidence of a range of clinical competencies appropriate to the role

Experience

  • Experience working in a community setting
  • Experience of working with children and young people
  • Experience of working as a supervisor to staff

Skills and Knowledge

  • Able to work autonomously and lead a clinical team to deliver vaccinations
  • IT literate
  • Knowledge of Clinical governance, audit, supervision and professional codes of conduct
  • Knowledge of current policies informing immunisation and public health
