BAND 2 Theatre/PACU Health Care Assistant , Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre, (SOTC)
Do you wish to work in a new facility where you will have the opportunity to enhance your specialist skills? If so, the Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre is a purpose built elective orthopaedic centre, which opened in 2006 and is now part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. We carry out approximately 6,500 procedures per year and undertake both minor, intermediate and complex orthopaedic work.
We are currently looking for enthusiastic Band 2 Theatre Health Care Assistant to join our friendly, forward thinking team. This is a varied role encompassing Theatres, patient admission and discharge areas.
We pride ourselves on having an MRSA free centre, excellent patient satisfaction results and ensure our clinical outcomes clinical outcomes are closely monitored.
In brief the SOTC comprises of four operating theatres, a daycase facility and 31 inpatient beds including a 4 bedded Level 1 together with a suite of consulting rooms.
The post holder will complete an orientation period to the clinical areas in accordance with the Trust’s induction programme. You will also be supported in your ongoing professional development.

Main duties of the job
- Check that all the equipment is ready and working before the theatres list begins.
- Check operating rooms to ensure correct levels of stock for each operating list and recording any shortages of supply.
- Empty the large trolley when it returns from CSSD with tins of instruments and sterile extras and check them off against supply list, report discrepancies, being aware of what is needed for the day ahead.
- Asist the scrub nurses and operating department practitioners to prepare and lay up the trolleys for the operating lists.
- Perform individual handholding support when needed for patients undergoing local anaesthesia often when patients are distressed and emotional.
- Report any changes in patient’s condition to nursing staff and/or ODP’s.
- Assist nursing staff with day surgery patients undergoing pre-operative local or general anaesthesia including pulse monitoring, oxygen saturation, ECG monitoring.
- Assist with cleaning tasks, errands and general duties appropriate to the clinical area as required to include removal of foul linen and cleaning up of body fluids and occasionally vomit.
- Assist with patient’s personal clinical care.
- Act as a circulating theatre nurse for on call evenings and weekends and weekdays when needed.

- Good communication skills. Evidence of good Maths and English skills.
