Role Summary 

Antenatal Screening Support Worker (ASSW) are to act as members of the care team working under the supervision and guidance of registered midwives and other professional staff. ASSW’s, assist in the planning, implementation, evaluation and delivery of care by providing support to registered staff, patients and their families. This will be achieved by the performance of specific care tasks carried out after the successful completion of a programme of formal training and assessment. The key role of the ASSW will be to provide support to women who are entering the antenatal screening pathway, and to support the Antenatal screening Midwives

Main duties of the job

a) General

  • Help to reinforce Health Education advice to women.
  • Respect the need for privacy and dignity.
  • Report any change in the condition of the mother to the registered midwife.
  • Report all incidents, complaints, enquiries or accidents to the midwife in charge/Team leader.
  • Assist in the collection of maternity notes and any other administrative duties.

·         Ensure equipment is in a safe and clean condition, reporting defects to the midwife in charge.

  • Adhere to Trust infection control policy.
  • Maintain high standards of personal appearance in accordance with Trust Uniform / Non uniform Policy.
  • Participate in the allocation of care at team level.
  • Receive and pass on messages and information.
  • Assist with training and supporting new Maternity support workers.
  • Assist the midwife with specific errands/tasks.
  • Contribute to raising awareness of public health issue e.g. smoking/passive smoking.
  • Assist midwife at a normal delivery.
  • Perform venepuncture on a daily basis as part of the combined screening test or Quadruple test. 

 

b) Ante/ care

  • Delivery specific packages of care under their own initiative and report outcomes.
  • Help others in the team to develop and maintain safe standards of care within the Antenatal clinic setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

c) Hospital

  • Work independently in coordinating repeat blood tests as required when printing the daily clinic list of booking bloods. This information will also need to be emailed to the community midwife to check the final result of any extra tests done.

 

  • Liaise with the community midwives regarding extra tests and appointments that have been arranged.

 

  • Support the Antenatal Screening Coordinator with collecting data for quarterly Key Performance Indicators for Public Health England.

 

  • Independently organise paperwork and file in the maternity folders for women with specific screening needs.

     

    • Independently liaise with Screening Midwives across site to care for women with unexpected anomalies that are found during scan appointments.

     

    • Liaise with other professionals in the multidisciplinary team in the absence of an Antenatal Screening midwife as required.

     

    • Regularly update and document information on excel spreadsheets that are used by all the Antenatal Screening Team to track and review women under our care.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Healthcare related NVQ, BTEC or equivalent at Level 3
  • National Care Certificate
  • Maths and English GCSE passes at grade D or above.
  • Previous experience in similar healthcare role
Desirable criteria
  • competency/training in Venepuncture
  • Evidence and experience of autonomous working/managing a caseload
