Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Bexhill Hospital we offer a range of outpatient, day surgery, rehabilitation and intermediate care services. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.

In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

 

Job overview

An exciting opportunity for an Acute Oncology Nurse Practitioner has arisen to join our passionate and forward thinking Acute Oncology team at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.

The Acute Oncology Service is an essential interface between acute,  community services and oncology, supporting personalised care through improved communication, timely access to expert advice, improved patient experience, early discharge and admission avoidance. 

The team works collaboratively across the trust and as part of the multi disciplinary team made up of oncologists, radiologists, histologists, physician associates, clinical nurse specialists and inpatient teams.

Our current projected goals are to enhance the immunotherapy toxicity service and to provide more Acute Oncology fast track clinics.

This position is cross site, however the post holder will have a designated base.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to work autonomously as well part of the immediate and larger teams participating in the assessment, diagnostic testing and management of acute cancer patients while promoting the acute oncology service. You will give advice, instigate investigations and implement patient care as appropriate to manage the acutely unwell oncology patient.

You will provide essential communication to improve patient experience and quality of care, reducing lengths of stay and where possible averting hospital admissions.

To support the lead acute oncology nurse practitioner in the planning and development of the future service in accordance with the Trust's policies and procedures utilising the most effective resources. 

The Acute Oncology Service provides specialist advice to health professionals across East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust for patients who present with acute symptoms, related to their treatment or cancer and patients who present as an emergency with a suspected but undiagnosed cancer.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Level 1 Registration
  • Educated to degree level
  • Mentorship
  • Supplementary prescribing qualification (or willingness to undertake)
  • Evidence of continued professional development to Masters level of equivalent level of knowledge and experience
Desirable criteria
  • Nurse Independent Prescriber

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of three years post-registration experience
  • Experience of venepuncture and cannulation
Desirable criteria
  • Two years in Oncology at band 6 or above
  • Previous experience in taking part in research and audit
  • Consideration will be given to those with extensive experience in related speciality
  • Experience of administration of systemic anti-cancer therapies
