Job overview

To assist with the provision of Dermatology outpatient services within the Division at Western Sussex Hospitals. (Mainly assisting in Dermatology theatre with dermatology surgical procedures). 

To assist with the most effective use of resources and manpower. 

To participate in the planning and developing of the future service in accordance with the Trust's policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

To actively take part in meeting the needs of the patients under the supervision of a qualified nurse, working within the Trust's policies and procedures and the philosophy of the department. To be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team under the direction and supervision of a qualified nurse and to be continually aware of the need for confidentiality. Where appropriate, to continue to develop own capabilities in nursing tasks in order to deliver a high standard of care.       To assist patients with their anxieties pre-operatively.    To assist patients with their comfort and well being during surgery.  Monitor and record patient’s vital signs (including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and oxygen saturation) and report any abnormal results immediately to registered nurse staff.

Demonstrate an understanding of infection control issues by attending mandatory training, understand infection control procedures, accept responsibility for own infection control practice and be willing to challenge others’ practice.

Ensure that all patient public areas, where applicable and utility room is clean and tidy at all times and to inform the appropriate member of staff when the required standard is not maintained.

To clean equipment on a daily basis, including examination/theatre couch, dressing trolleys, linen trolley, bucket/bowl transport trolley, notes trolley, , weighing scales and inform the nurse in charge when any of these equipment are faulty.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To actively take part in meeting the needs of the patients under the supervision of a qualified nurse, working within the Trust's policies and procedures and the philosophy of the department.
  • To be an effective member of a multidisciplinary team under the direction and supervision of a qualified nurse and to be continually aware of the need for confidentiality.
  • Where appropriate, to continue to develop own capabilities in nursing tasks in order to deliver a high standard of care.

·         To assist patients with their anxieties pre-operatively.

·         To assist patients with their comfort and well being during surgery.

·         Monitor and record patient’s vital signs (including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and oxygen saturation) and report any abnormal results immediately to registered nurse staff.

·         Measure and record patient’s height and weight

·         Perform urine pregnancy test (After training) and record results.

·         Undertake urinalysis, MRSA screening swabs,

·         Demonstrate an understanding of infection control issues by attending mandatory training, understand infection control procedures, accept responsibility for own infection control practice and be willing to challenge others’ practice.

·         Liase with members of the trust multidisciplinary teams to ensure complete holistic care is provided.

·         Report to registered nurse any problems arising during observation of or conversation with patients and careers

·         Co-operate with all colleagues to maintain a presentable and safe environment.

·         Ensure that all patient public areas, where applicable and utility room is clean and tidy at all times and to inform the appropriate member of staff when the required standard is not maintained.

·          To clean equipment on a daily basis, including examination/theatre couch, dressing trolleys, linen trolley, bucket/bowl transport trolley, notes trolley, , weighing scales and inform the nurse in charge when any of these equipment are faulty.

·         To prepare dressing/procedure trolley

·         To prepare the minor operation theatre,  treatment rooms and consulting rooms daily

·         To assist medical and nursing staff with clinical procedures ( skin biopsy, fine needle aspiration, application of topical treatment to patient’s skin)

·         To undertake daily checks and document compliance or report repairs/faulty equipment as necessary (eg resuscitation trolley, oxygen and suction equipment, fridge temperatures, thermometers, check emergency equipment plugged in and other checks delegated by the nurse in charge.

·         To report faulty equipment to the relevant department for repairs

·         Ensure stock level of clinical and non clinical supplies are maintained through ordering, storing and rotating and safely disposing of out of date’s stock.

·         To assist the doctor/ nurse by acting as chaperone during clinic consultation/ procedure when required

·         To give patients verbal and written pre operative information.

·         To assist practitioner throughout surgical procedures.
