With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

Job overview

The post holder will exercise higher levels of judgment, discretion, and support decision-making in clinical care demonstrated through the Trust competency framework.  They will provide specialist expertise and advice under the guidance of the Lead Liver Nurse Specialist, demonstrating a sound understanding of the issues related to the identification, assessment, treatment, and management of the client group: those experiencing harm related to alcohol use.  They will monitor and improve standards of care through, a review of practice and support with staff competencies, clinical audit, evidence based practice, teaching and supporting professional colleagues, and the provision of professional leadership.  They will contribute to clinical governance within the service by undertaking audits and research as part of the MDT within the specialist field.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.    Contribute to local clinical networks (eg northern hepatology networks) and specialty groups, working in partnership with key professionals, and providing clinical advice to those who are non-clinicians where necessary. 

2.    Support with monitoring of liver patients on immunosuppressants, managing liver patient database, and oversight the hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance screening program.

3.    Support the running of the open access paracentesis service for patients with cirrhosis, enabling a more efficient smoother, more patient-centred service for those patients requiring ongoing regular large volume paracentesis.

4.    Recognises, understands and accepts the requirement to act as an advocate for patients, carers and organization. 

5.    Support other clinical staff to appropriately assess, plan and implement evidence-based best practices for the client group. 

6.    Support with the development, review, and delivery of specific and relevant specialist teaching programs, for other clinical staff.

7.    To assist the Lead Liver Nurse Specialist, in conjunction with the consultant gastroenterologists after a period of training, a nurse-led liver clinic initially reviews patients with ascites and stable cirrhosis but in time to also see new patients.

8.    Demonstrate commitment to IWL principles and flexible working patterns, to meet the needs of the service and staff

9.    Tackle discrimination and harassment, and promote equality and diversity in the workplace

10.  Reduce sickness absence; and workplace accidents; and promote zero tolerance on violence against staff

11.  Take responsibility for personal development and education and the development of a Personal Development Plan.
