Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Specialty Medicine Care Unit for a highly motivated part-time Healthcare Support Worker to cover the diabetes outpatient foot clinics.  Working as part of the Multidisciplinary team the post holder will:

  • Provide a patient-centred, clean and safe environment for people with diabetes attending foot clinic appointments
  • Undertake generic and specialist skills and procedures required for the clinic
  • Maintain a compassionate and professional attitude at all times
  • Be reliable and flexible to service needs

The hours for this vacancy are 15 hours per week (08:00 – 13:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays).

Main duties of the job

Work cooperatively as part of the multidisciplinary team including nursing and medical staff, allied healthcare professionals, healthcare support workers and administrators. Contribute to maintaining a safe, efficient and clean environment for patients attending diabetes outpatient appointments. Answer the telephone / greet visitors in a polite and professional manner. Prepare clinic and treatment rooms for patients and orientate patients and their relatives or carers to the department. Chaperone and act as an advocate for patients during examination by clinical staff, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained. Assist and provide patients with personal care. Carry out and record patient observations, including blood pressure, pulse and oxygen saturation. Recognise symptoms of hypoglycaemia, check patients’ capillary blood glucose and treat appropriately. Undertake competency-based practices which are required for the department (for example, complex wound dressings; plaster cast removal). Escort or transfer patients to/from x-ray; phlebotomy; transport; wards. Liaise with stock controller and in their absence maintain stock levels and clinical supplies in the area. Use paper and electronic systems to retrieve and record patient information in line with Trust documentation standards and operational systems. Manage own time effectively, ensure good time keeping in relation to shift commencement and breaks

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent, to include maths and English at grades A-C. NHS Care Certificate Moving and handling
Desirable criteria
  • Computer skills including email and Microsoft Office applications.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a HCSW role. Experience of working with patients with diabetes.
Desirable criteria
  • Patient observations, including capillary blood glucose measurement. Experience of working in the diabetes foot clinic

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Time management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Understanding of the importance of confidentiality. Ability to communicate at all levels
Desirable criteria
  • Wound dressing experience.
