Cardiothoracic Theatres are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a band 5 practitioner. We are seeking either an experienced practitioner who is looking for a new challenge or a Newly Qualified Nurse /Operating Department Practitioner looking to become part of a highly driven and valued professional team.  Previous experience and knowledge is not necessary as we offer a comprehensive training package with mentorship tailored to your needs. We pride ourselves in delivering high quality patient care and are committed to providing continual personal and professional development.

The Cardiothoracic Theatre Suit comprises of three operating theatres which specialises in both Cardiac and Thoracic surgery. We perform cutting edge heart and lung cancer surgery including Minimally Invasive Heart Valve Surgery, Video Assisted and Robotic Lobectomies. 

The Cardiothoracic unit at The James Cook University Hospital is a specialised regional service serving a population of 1.5 million stretching from Whitehaven in Cumbria to North Yorkshire, Teesside and Durham.  We are a centre for lung cancer and the focus of the Cancer Care Alliance of Teesside, South Durham and Yorkshire.

Main duties of the job

The role is for either a scrub or anaesthetic practitioner, caring for patients undergoing planned Cardiothoracic surgery.  We also provide an emergency service for patients requiring life saving interventions.  Cardiothoracic Theatres operate Monday to Friday only.  An On Call commitment is required to provide a 24 hour service.  This commitment attracts an extra payment.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered General Nurse or ODP Qualification
  • • Current NMC / HCPC registration
  • • Diploma or Degree in relevant qualification

Knowledge & Skills

  • • Facilitate the development of junior staff providing preceptorship, support, and assistance in their own professional and academic development.
  • • Effective verbal & non-verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • • Ability to work within a multi-professional team.
  • • To assist other staff members in their time management and ability to prioritise care.
  • • Maintain a high standard of clear and concise documentation and record keeping within the clinical environment.
